Netflix for Android updated to support Jelly Bean

Seems like the Google suite of applications aren't the only ones being updated to show some Jelly Bean love. Netflix has pushed out an update to the Google Play Store that promises support for Android 4.1. Additionally there are some general bug fixes included too. 

Guess now the guys have something to do with those shiny new Nexus 7 tablets, should the I/O action ever get a little boring. Yeah, we know, unlikely. Hit the Google Play Store now to snag yourselves a copy.

While an undergrad I double majored in both English and History of Art and in my final semester, I did an entire course in William Carlos Williams. My major paper considered the collection of poems titled "Pictures from Bruegel" which is a composite representation of Bruegel?s work through the viewpoint of Williams. The poetry illustrates the way in which Williams? eye follows the canvas and his impressions while gazing upon the works.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder, the 16th-century Flemish Renaissance painter, was a master landscape artist. Within these landscapes, small narratives are depicted which are focused on the life of the working class society. The scenes are split between work and play with subjects varying from wedding dances to haymaking as pictured in "The Harvesters." This panel is one of six created to depict the seasons and represents the late summer/early autumn when peasants would reap the hay.

Rather than focus on the action of the peasants, Bruegel chose to take a broad view of the landscape to portray the way in which the land is transformed through farming. Although the landscape is the heart of Bruegel?s painting, the subjects of "The Corn Harvest" by William Carlos Williams are the peasants in the foreground of the canvas. Grilled Corncobs with Parmesan, Lime & Paprika
Inspired by a dish served at Ms.G?s in Potts Point

Yield: 2 servings

2 corncobs
1 tablespoon butter
1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
juice of 1/2 of a lime
1/2 teaspoon hot paprika
handful of fresh coriander leaves

Husk the corncobs and remove all of the silk. Rub them with a bit of butter and place on a grill or in a griddle pan over medium-high heat. Cook for about 5 to 10 minutes depending on the size of the corncob, rotating every couple of minutes until the cob is evenly cooked. The corn will be soft and tender when done.

Remove from heat and immediately cover with a quarter cup of grated Parmesan cheese so the residual heat in the corn melts the cheese. Squeeze over the lime, dust with the hot paprika and scatter the coriander leaves. Serve immediately.

Judges in The Hague acquitted Radovan Karadzic of one count of genocide on Thursday, but left 10 other war crimes and genocide charges standing against the former Bosnian Serb leader.?

Judges said prosecutors had not presented enough evidence to support the genocide count covering mass killings, expulsions and persecution by Serb forces of Muslims and Croats from Bosnian towns early in the country's 1992-95 war.

Justin Bieber Comparisons Are 'Flattering,' Austin Mahone Says

Many call Texan teen, who built up fanbase on social media, the next Bieber.

<P>What do you call a group of kids who are so fiercely loyal to their young pop idol that they buy up all available tickets to a show in minutes, journey from far-off locales and park themselves on a sidewalk for hours just so they can get a glimpse of their beloved teenage Texan? Are they Beliebers? Of course not &#8212; Justin Bieber is Canadian, not Texan. They're Mahomies.</P><P>Mahomies are fans of 16-year-old Austin Mahone, the boy many believe will be crowned the Next Justin. The similarities are there: Both are fresh-faced, drum-playing crooners who built their massive fandom using social media and YouTube. And both are followed everywhere by throngs of screaming girls.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Austin Mahone Talks About His 'Mahomies'" id="vid:808969" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>But Austin Mahone does something that most fledgling pop stars don't: When his fans reach out to him, he reaches back. He follows them on Twitter. He keeps them updated on his comings and goings through video posts and Instagrams. He even Skypes with fans, one-on-one (for a fee). "Individually, they all give something to support me, which got me to where I am right now," Mahone told MTV News. "I just want to give back to them as much as I can and say thank you."</P><P>Mahone has no debut album yet and, as of press time, no label on which to release one. He does have two singles, "11:11" and "Say Somethin," which can be purchased on iTunes. He also has more than 777,000 Twitter followers and nearly half a million Facebook fans. Nicolette Valenti, 14, flew to New York from Boca Raton, Florida, to see Austin's sold-out show at Best Buy Theater on Friday; she said she would do anything to be around him. "Some girls just like him because he's cute," Valenti explained. "But I think he's really talented."</P><P>Mahone's journey to stardom began two years ago, when he started making videos with his friend Alex Constancio and posting them on YouTube. Then he started doing covers of artists like Bruno Mars, Adele and yes, Justin Bieber. His online fame steadily grew; he began making personal appearances and doing live shows. He's since relocated from Texas to Miami to work on new music.</P><P>"Coming from my bedroom in San Antonio to this big world and going from singing covers off my laptop to making music in this nice studio, making professional-sounding music &#8212; it's just weird," Mahone said. "It's crazy. I can't believe that happened."</P><P>The inevitable comparisons to Mr. Bieber don't seem to bother him too much. "I mean, it's flattering. It's not that bad of a thing," he said. "It's cool because he's such an inspiration to me and he's so successful, and I just hope that I'll be as successful as him someday." The comparisons do, however, bother many Mahomies.</P><P>"People say that Austin is the new Justin Bieber &#8212; I don't think that at all," said 14-year-old Maggie Benzenhafer as she waited on the sidewalk outside the Best Buy Theater. Blue Jays power past Red Sox

BOSTON (AP) - Take them out of Toronto and the Blue Jays hit plenty of long balls.

Jose Bautista, Colby Rasmus and J.P. Arencibia hit two-run homers Monday night to lead the Blue Jays to a 9-6 victory over Boston despite two home runs by David Ortiz that tied him for the most multihomer games in Red Sox history.

It was the fourth win in six games for Toronto, which overcame two errors and blew an early four-run lead.

"The top of our order has been swinging good of late," Blue Jays manager John Farrell said. "The way Jose, Edwin (Encarnacion) and Rasmus have been going. ... They're swinging the bats well for us."

The Blue Jays are tied with the Yankees for the major league lead with 54 road homers and they have come in 39 games away from Rogers Centre.

They needed all of them Monday because of Ortiz's power display.

Ortiz hit a two-run homer and a solo shot, his 37th multihomer game for the Red Sox, tying Ted Williams for the club record. He has 398 career homers that ties Dale Murphy for 51st all-time.

"I can't tell you what to attribute it to," Boston manager Bobby Valentine said of the 36-year-old Ortiz continuing to swing a hot bat. "His batting practice every day is stellar, his games have been consistently terrific. The only time he got outside of himself was a couple of days ago. Then he got the off day (Sunday) and he came back with a vengeance tonight."

It's his 11th straight season with 20 or more homers.

Henderson Alvarez (4-6) pitched five innings then left with right elbow soreness. He allowed five runs - three earned - and six hits to snap a four-game losing streak. The Blue Jays had lost his last seven starts.

"When he went out for the sixth inning he had trouble getting loose," Farrell said. "It was a precautionary thing. We'll get him an MRI tomorrow. We don't anticipate (him missing a start), but we're going to take every precautionary measure."

Casey Janssen worked the ninth for his eighth save, striking out the only three batters he faced.

Boston's Felix Doubront (8-4) gave up seven runs - five earned - and 11 hits in six innings.

Boston lost for just the third time in its last 12 in a game delayed by rain for 1 hour, 56 minutes.

With the score tied 5-5 in the sixth, Ben Francisco had a two-out double off the wall in center field over Ryan Kalish's leap and Arencibia homered off a sign over the Green Monster seats.

Bautista's homer, his 24th, off reliever Matt Albers made it 9-5 in the seventh. The Blue Jays had a runner on first with two outs when heavy rain accompanied by lightning and thunder delayed the game.

After play resumed, Blue Jays first baseman Encarnacion and Bautista both made diving plays on balls.

The Blue Jays took advantage of third baseman Will Middlebrooks' fielding error to score two unearned runs in a four-run first. Brett Lawrie opened the game with a single before Rasmus hit a homer that hooked around the right-field foul pole, his 14th, to make it 2-0. Bautista reached on the error and scored on Encarnacion's double. Rajai Davis hustled down the line for a run-scoring fielder's choice.

Rasmus' homer hit the top of the short wall and bounced over.

"I knew I barreled it up," he said. "Once it hit the top, I knew it was gone."

Boston cut it to 4-2 in the bottom on the inning on Ortiz's homer that snapped an 0-for-11 stretch. His second homer made it 9-6 in the eighth.

"It's unbelievable," Middlebrooks said of Ortiz. "I thought the guy hits everything hard."

Rasmus' RBI single made it 5-2 in the fifth.

In the third, the Blue Jays made two errors - one by shortstop Yunel Escobar and the other by second baseman Kelly Johnson - which led to both runs. Johnson booted Jarrod Saltalamacchia's two-out grounder, allowing Dustin Pedroia to score from third, before Adrian Gonzalez followed with an RBI single.

Kalish's RBI single tied it in the fourth.

NOTES: Middlebrooks was named the AL's Player of the Week on Monday. "It's a nice bonus," Valentine said. "He had a great week." Outfielder Cody Ross joked, "he stole it from me. I made a good push, though." Ross had two homers and five RBIs in Boston's win Sunday. ... Blue Jays 1B Adam Lind was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday. "It was in an environment that allowed him to relax and get back to the type of player he was in Toronto," Farrell said. "His performance has forced the decision to get him back here to get a productive left-handed hitter back in the lineup. He just felt like his body was more loose and he had increased range at first base." ... Valentine said RHP Josh Beckett, on the 15-day DL with shoulder inflammation, may pitch Friday in Seattle. He's eligible to come off the DL Thursday.

Consumer confidence slipped in June

NEW YORK (AP) ? Americans can't seem to shake their uneasy feeling about the economy.

Consumer confidence fell in June for the fourth straight month as worries about jobs and the overall economy outweighed relief at the gas pump and an improvement in the housing market, according to a private research group.

The decline was modest; the Conference Board said Tuesday that its Consumer Confidence Index fell from 64.4 in May to 62 in June. But the four-month slide from 71.6 in February is significant and corresponds with a slowdown in hiring by U.S. companies over the same period.

The index is widely watched because consumer spending accounts for 70 percent of U.S. economic activity. A reading of 90 indicates a healthy economy. The index hit an all-time low of 25.3 in February 2009.

The latest survey shows that despite lower gas prices, Americans are still worried about stagnant hiring, low home values, the choppy stock market and a worsening European economy that some fear will hurt the U.S.

"We're trying to break free from this orbit, and we haven't been able to," said Mark Vitner, senior economist at Wells Fargo Economics. "Job market concerns will always trump swings in energy prices."

Alyson Seligman, who lives in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., agrees. Seligman, who runs a small public relations firm, said lower gas prices haven't caused her to feel much more confident in the economy.

"Anything can turn on a dime," she said. "You have to be prepared."

Worries about job and income growth weighed the heaviest on Americans in the index, which was based on a survey conducted from June 1 through June 14 of about 500 randomly selected people nationwide. The margin of error for the index is plus or minus 5.5 points.

Those stating jobs are "hard to get" increased slightly to 41.5 percent from 40.9 percent, while those expecting more jobs in the months ahead declined to 14.1 percent from 15.4 percent. The proportion of consumers expecting an increase in their incomes declined to 14.8 percent from 15.7 percent.

Consumers' dwindling confidence since February corresponds with a sharp slowdown in hiring. Hiring averaged 96,000 during the combined period of March, April and May. That marked a slowdown from the average of 252,000 a month in the prior three months.

The strong hiring during the winter helped lift the Consumer Confidence Index from 40.9 in October to the highest reading it had been in a year during February. But in the following months that hiring has slipped, so has consumer confidence.

Meanwhile, a measure of the number of people applying for unemployment benefits over the past month has reached a six-month high, the government said last week. That suggests June could be another lackluster month for hiring. The government releases June data on July 6.

Americans also are grappling with declines in their retirement funds. After rallying earlier in the year, the stock market has lost its steam since the beginning of May amid concerns about the economy both here and abroad. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has fallen nearly 6 percent since early May.

On the news of declining consumer confidence, major stock indexes drifted between slight gains and losses on Tuesday, following steep losses the day before.

And Darden Restaurants Inc., which operates Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants, expects earnings that are short of Wall Street expectations and said customers were turned off by a $1 increase for Red Lobster's dish "Festival of Shrimp."

Given growing uncertainty about the economy, Michael P. Niemira, chief economist at The International Council of Shopping Centers trade group, on Tuesday trimmed his sales forecast for June by a 0.5 percentage point.

He now expects revenue at stores opened at least a year to be up 3 percent to 3.5 percent. That follows a 4 percent rise in May.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Google CEO Larry Page is missing Thursday's annual shareholders meeting because he has lost his voice.

Page's absence was announced at the beginning of the meeting by Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt. Page, Google's co-founder, replaced Schmidt as CEO last year.

Schmidt told shareholders that Page's voice problems will also prevent him from speaking next week at a Google conference for its Android software for smartphones. Page will also miss a conference call with analysts next month when Google reviews its financial results for the second quarter.

Schmidt says Page, 39, will continue as CEO while he recovers. Google declined further comment about the nature of Page's voice difficulty.

Google Inc. approved the creation of a new class of non-voting stock during the meeting to preserve its co-founders' control.

What Venture Capital Firms Looking for

One way of explaining the different ways in which banks and venture capital firms evaluate a small business seeking funds, put simply, is: Banks look at its immediate future, but are most heavily influenced by its past. Venture capitalists look to its longer run future.

To be sure, venture capital firms and individuals are in?terested in many of the same factors that influence bankers in their analysis of loan applications from smaller companies. All financial people want to know the results and ratios of past operations, the amount and intended use of the needed funds, and the earnings and financial condition of future projections. But venture capitalists look much more closely at the features of the product and the size of the market than do commercial banks.

Banks are creditors. They're interested in the pro?duct/market position of the company to the extent they look for assurance that this service or product can pro?vide steady sales and generate sufficient cash flow to repay the loan. They look at projections to be certain that owner/managers have done their homework.

Venture capital firms are owners. They hold stock in the company, adding their invested capital to its equity base. Therefore, they examine existing or planned pro?ducts or services and the potential markets for them with extreme care. They invest only in firms they believe can rapidly increase sales and generate substan?tial profits.

Why? Because venture capital firms invest for long?term capital, not for interest income. A common estimate is that they look for three to five times their investment in five or seven years.

Of course venture capitalists don't realize capital gains on all their investments. Certainly they don't make capital gains of 300 percent to 500 percent except on a very limited portion of their total investments. But their intent is to find venture projects with this appreciation potential to make up for investments that aren't successful.

Venture capital is a risky business, because it's difficult to judge the worth of early stage companies. So most venture capital firms set rigorous policies for venture proposal size, maturity of the seeking company, re?quirements and evaluation procedures to reduce risks, since their investments are unprotected in the event of failure.

Size of the Venture Proposal.

Most venture capital firms are interested in investment projects requiring an investment of 250,000 Pounds? to 2,500,000 Pounds. Projects requiring under 250,000 are of limited interest because of the high cost of investigation and administration; however, some venture firms will consider smaller proposals, if the investment is intriguing enough.

The typical venture capital firm receives over 1,000 pro?posals a year. Probably 90 percent of these will be rejected quickly because they don't fit the established geographical, technical, or market area policies of the firm -? or because they have been poorly prepared.

The remaining 10 percent are investigated with care. These investigations are expensive. Firms may hire consultants to evaluate the product, particularly when it's the result of innovation or is technologically complex. The market size and competitive position of the company are analyzed by contacts with present and potential customers, suppliers, and others. Production costs are reviewed. The financial condition of the company is confirmed by an auditor. The legal form and registra?tion of the business are checked. Most importantly, the character and competence of the management are evaluated by the venture capital firm, normally via a thorough background check.

These preliminary investigations may cost a venture firm between 2,000 and 5,000 pounds per company in?vestigated. They result in perhaps 10 to 15 proposals of interest. Then, second investigations, more thorough and more expensive than the first, reduce the number of proposals under consideration to only three or four. Eventually the firm invests in one or two of these.

Maturity of the Firm Making the Proposal.

Most ven?ture capital firms' investment interest is limited to pro?jects proposed by companies with some operating history, even though they may not yet have shown a profit. Companies that can expand into a new product line or a new market with additional funds are particularly interesting. The venture capital firm can pro?vide funds to enable such companies to grow in a spurt rather than gradually as they would on retained earn?ings.

Companies that are just starting or that have serious financial difficulties may interest some venture capitalists, if the potential for significant gain over the long run can be identified and assessed. If the venture firm has already extended its portfolio to a large risk concentration, they may be reluctant to invest in these areas because of increased risk of loss.

Management of the Proposing Firm.

Most venture capital firms concentrate primarily on the competence and character of the proposing firm's management. They feel that even mediocre products can be suc?cessfully manufactured, promoted, and distributed by an experienced, energetic management group.

They look for a group that is able to work together easi?ly and productively, especially under conditions of stress from temporary reversals and competitive pro?blems. They know that even excellent products can be ruined by poor management. Many venture capital firms really invest in management capability, not in pro?duct or market potential.

Obviously, analysis of managerial skill is difficult. A partner or senior executive of a venture capital firm normally spends at least a week at the offices of a com?pany being considered, talking with and observing the management, to estimate their competence and character.

Venture capital firms usually require that the company under consideration have a complete management group. Each of the important functional area - pro?duct design, marketing, production, finance, and control - must be under the direction of a trained, experienced member of the group. Responsibilities must be clearly assigned. And, in addition to a thorough understanding of the industry, each member of the management team must be firmly committed to the company and its future.

The "Something Special" in the Plan.

Next in impor?tance to the excellence of the proposing firm's manage?ment group, most venture capital firms seek a distinc?tive element in the strategy or product/market/process combination of the firm. This distinctive element may be a new feature of the product or process or a par?ticular skill or technical competence of the manage?ment. But it must exist. It must provide a competitive advantage.
