GreenGT H2 eyes-on: the first fuel cell-powered racer to tackle Le Mans

The 24 hour race at Le Mans held every year is among the most punishing automotive tests on the planet: race-bred machines running top-speed (or close) for a full day. Recently, gasoline-powered cars have had their dominance usurped by diesels, who themselves are now losing to hybrids. The next step? It could be EVs. The GreenGT H2 will take the grid of next year's 24 hour race as an experimental entry, driving the full race distance pushing only water vapor out its tailpipe. Hydrogen is stored in the two large tanks running down the sides, while the massive fuel cell stack itself is situated behind the driver. Power output is somewhere north of 500 horsepower, which is quite healthy for a car that the company hopes will be down under 1000Kg (2,200 pounds) by the time it hits the track in anger. Enough to win Le Mans? Almost certainly not, but it'll be fun to watch it try.

Is Pricing Low the Way to Go? | Zillow Blog

It may seem logical that if you price your home low, it will sell quickly. Some real estate agents believe everyone should price low. The truth is, there are a lot of things to consider when pricing a home. And it helps sellers and buyers to understand clearly the factors that typically influence the asking and the actual selling price.

It?s not an exact science

There?s no exact science to pricing a home to sell. When working with a potential seller, the best an agent can do is provide them with a ?range? of value. The range is based on timing, the competition and the most recent comparable sales (or ?comps?).

2 similar homes, 2 different prices

Unlike the local grocery store or big-box retailer, which set product prices based on such factors as inventory and past sales of the same product, every seller and every home is unique. In most cases, the seller has only one home to sell. Ultimately, the seller, who may or may not be as experienced as their agent or an active buyer in their local market, sets the selling price. So you could have two similar homes on the same block, yet there?s a 10 percent price difference between them.

In Daly City, CA, not long ago, two single-family homes of similar designs and layout, and in a prime neighborhood, went on the market around the same time. Separately, the sellers? agents suggested that the value range of their homes was between $425,000 and $450,000. At that time, the market was strong, and inventory was low.

Seller A chose to list his home at $489,000, hoping a buyer would negotiate him down to a figure in the high end of the range. Seller B listed her home at $425,000, wanting a quick sale. She received multiple offers and sold her home quickly ? at the top end of the range. Six weeks later, Seller A?s property was sitting on the market ? no offers.

The herd mentality

Why such different outcomes for essentially the same house? Answer: The herd mentality.

Buyers tend to flock to where other buyers are hovering. If three people seem serious about a property, then it must be a good value, location or both. Other potential buyers will likely become interested, too. In fact, the home will seem so desirable, or such a good value, to them that they?ll compete for it, ultimately paying the top of the value range ? or higher.

On the other hand, if they go to the open house of the overpriced home and don?t see anyone there, they?ll think there?s something missing ? or wrong. They don?t want to be the only one at the party. They move on to another property or make a low offer, because they appear to be the only interested party.

Advice for sellers

The example of Seller B, who priced low and yet got top dollar, may seem to suggest that pricing low is indeed the way to go. But not so fast.

For one thing, it?s not a good idea to market your home at a price you aren?t willing to take. And in slower markets, it may make more sense to price at the higher end of the range so you don?t leave money on the table. Is your home on a busy street, in a bad school district? Probably not worth the risk to price it low.

The point is, every seller and situation is different. You can?t simply assume that in a strong market, if you price your home low, you?ll receive multiple offers and it will sell for more than what you asked. The important thing is to work with an experienced local agent and to understand that, ultimately, the market will take the sale price where it needs to go.

Advice for buyers

If you?ve been in the market awhile, you likely have a good feel for values. If a price seems high, but there are still tons of people circling around, don?t be afraid to go in with a full-price offer or even under asking. There have been hundreds of examples where it seems like there were going to be multiple offers. Then, on the ?offer day? (the day the listing agent sets to review all offers), the seller gets zero bids. Or one offer comes in at the list price.

Look at overpriced homes that aren?t getting any action. Some homes have languished on the market for six months with no offers. Then the seller makes a major price reduction and receives four offers, and the place ends up selling for more than the original list price. You want to be the one who makes an offer before the reduction.

Ultimately, look at the comps, talk to your agent, trust your gut and go in with your strongest, cleanest offer.

Data firm hits Craigslist with monopoly claim ? Tech News and ...

A data company has filed a dramatic counterclaim against Craigslist, accusing the classified site of acting as an illegal monopolist. A court filing argues Craigslist engaged in illegal, predatory behavior through actions like ?ghosting? and unfair licenses.

In an ongoing fight over ad listings, data company 3Taps has made good on its threat to file an antitrust claim against classified giant Craigslist.

In a claim filed Monday in San Francisco federal court, 3Taps accuses Craigslist of operating as an ?unchallenged monopolist? to pull in $100 million to $300 million per year. 3Taps asks the court to declare that Craigslist is violating Section 2 of the Sherman Act, a law that forbids companies from abusing dominant market power.

In particular, 3Taps claims that Craigslist is perpetuating a monopoly through four types of acts: sending sham cease and desist letters against potential competitors; making overly broad copyright claims; imposing improper license terms on users; and ?ghosting? (making posts with links to competitors invisibile to other users.

The monopoly allegations are the latest turn in a legal dust-up that began this summer when Craigslist filed a copyright complaint against 3Taps and popular apartment hunting site, PadMapper.

The debate turns on who owns the classified ads on Craigslist at a time when up-and-coming companies are creating tools that can show the information in new, visually attractive formats. PadMapper, for instance, lets house hunters see listings superimposed on maps of a neighborhood. Meanwhile, some critics complain that Craigslist?s design and interface is stagnant and stuck in the 1990s.

For its part, Craigslist has suggested that these companies are free-riding on infrastructure that it developed.

The new court filing by 3Taps (embedded below) is fairly dramatic for this type of document and appears geared to further a media strategy aimed at swinging public opinion against Craigslist. But the company?s CEO Greg Kidd also appears to be playing for the win in court by hiring the white shoe law firm Skadden Arps. Here are some selected portions from the complaint (highlights are mine) :

Just as Google, Bing, Ask, or any other general search engine facilitate efficient searches, 3taps enables user-authored ads on craigslist (or any similar public advertising sites) to be efficiently searched. 3taps? technology provides a previously unrealized public benefit, by enhancing the accessibility of the classified ads of potential sellers by potential buyers. ?[...]

This also falsely insinuates that craigslist broadly serves humanity as a ?free? service, a grossly misleading characterization given craigslist?s accumulation of enormous and largely undisclosed profits, a pattern and practice of predatory lawsuits (such as this one) aimed at obstructing innovation?

3taps denies copying any ?craigslist content.? craigslist is neither the owner nor exclusive licensee of any ?content? posted to craigslist.com by any third party creator

it has become a de facto common carrier for U.S. online marketplace exchange postings, giving craigslist an ability to command and dictate terms and conditions in consumer classified markets, control and obstruct innovation in those markets, and engage in anticompetitive behaviors consistent with monopoly power.

As an unchallenged monopolist across these various markets, craigslist has generated revenues somewhere between $100-$300 million per year, and that?s without sinking any significant costs into research and development or innovation.

Referees make conflicting signals as Seattle receiver Golden Tate fights for the ball on what was called a touchdown catch against the Packers on Monday night.

SEATTLE - In a bizarre ending that capped a brutal weekend for replacement officials, the Seattle Seahawks somehow beat the Green Bay Packers 14-12 on Monday night in a game that's certain to re-ignite frustrations over the locked-out refs.

Russell Wilson threw a disputed 24-yard touchdown pass to Golden Tate on the final play of the game, a game that finally ended 10 minutes later when both teams were brought back on the field for the extra point.

Wilson scrambled from the pocket and threw to the corner of the end zone as the clock expired. Tate shoved Green Bay's Sam Shields out of the way, then wrestled with M.D. Jennings for possession. It was ruled on the field as a touchdown and after a lengthy review, referee Wayne Elliott came out from under the hood and announced "the ruling on the field stands" and CenturyLink Field erupted in celebration.

It was nearly 10 minutes before the teams were brought back for the extra point.

The final decision is only going to fuel debate about the replacement officials coming off a weekend filled with disputed calls.

"Don't ask me a question about the officials," Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy said. "I've never seen anything like that in all my years in football.

"I know it's been a wild weekend in the NFL and I guess we're part of it now."

And the last game of the weekend will debated more than any other.

Seattle (2-1) won its second straight, while Green Bay (1-2) and saw its streak of wins in six straight road openers snapped.

Wilson's heave came at the end of a final frantic drive after Seattle had previously missed on a fourth-down attempt from the Green Bay 7 with 2 minutes left. The turnover on downs appeared to end Seattle's hopes and cap an impressive second-half comeback by the Packers and Aaron Rodgers, who was sacked eight times ? all in the first half.

Green Bay averted disaster when John Kuhn fumbled on the Packers first play following the change of possession but center Jeff Saturday recovered. The Seahawks held and forced Green Bay to punt from the 4 with 57 seconds left. The 41-yard punt set Seattle up at the Green Bay 46 with 46 seconds remaining.

Wilson hit Sidney Rice for 22 yards on a slant then went for Tate in the end zone but the ball was batted away with 18 seconds left. He threw over the head of Evan Moore on second down leaving 12 seconds remaining and missed Tate again at the 5.

Wilson took the final snap with 8 seconds remaining. He appeared to be looking for Rice on the right side of the end zone, but rolled left and threw for Tate, who was in a crowd of three Packers defenders. His shove of Shields was obvious and it was never clear who had possession between Tate and Jennings.

Seattle instantly celebrated while the Packers argued with anyone in a striped shirt. Both teams were eventually shoved to the sidelines as Tate stomped through the end zone in celebration. Following the review, Elliott's announcement sent the stadium into delirium and even more confusion ensued until the teams finally returned to the field for the extra point.

"From what I understood from the officials it was a simultaneous catch. Tie goes to the runner. Good call," Seattle coach Pete Carroll said.

Rodgers had quite a different opinion.

"It was awful. Just look at the replay. And then the fact that it was reviewed, it was awful," he said. "That's all I'm going to say about it.
