North Korea to top agenda at Lee-Hu summit in China (Reuters)

SEOUL (Reuters) ? South Korean President Lee Myung-bak will this week ask China's leaders to use their influence to lean on North Korea to show restraint amid a delicate transition to a new leadership.

Lee will hold a summit with China's president, Hu Jintao, in Beijing and will "discuss ways to develop the strategic partnership between the two nations and cooperative measures for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula," the South Korean president's office said in a statement.

Lee's three-day trip to China, his second in four years, starts on Monday.

The South has said its primary foreign policy goal this year is maintaining stability on the divided peninsula as its unpredictable neighbour embarks on a third generation of dynastic rule following Kim Jong-il's death last month.

Little is known about Kim's chosen successor, his son Kim Jong-un, who in his late 20s and who will be relying on a coterie of trusted members of the military and political elite to act as minders while he cements his grip on power.

Both South Korea and the United States have urged China, the North's main ally and benefactor, to help restrain the new leadership from staging any hostile acts.

Analysts say the young Kim may order a "provocation," such as a small scale military attack or nuclear or missile test, to burnish a hardline image with the powerful military.

Over the past week, the North, which has twice tested nuclear devices, has stepped up its use of hostile language against the South.

China voiced its support for the North's new leadership soon after Kim's death was announced.

South Korea's ambassador to China, Lee Kyu-hyung, said last week that the South would continue to raise the issue of China's unwillingness to condemn North Korea when it provokes the South.

"PROBLEMATIC"

In 2010, South Korea criticised China for refusing to censure North Korea for torpedoing a South Korean warship, killing 46 sailors. The North denied it sank the vessel.

"It is problematic because China has appeared to take an attitude of protection and support for North Korea, while the North sometimes makes military provocations and implements some incorrect policies," Ambassador Lee Kyu-hyung told the South's Yonhap news agency.

South Korea would "continue to raise the issue and make efforts to persuade" China to change that attitude, he said.

China backed North Korea during the 1950-53 Korean War while the United States fought for the South. The United States still has about 28,000 troops in South Korea.

Lee and Hu are also expected to discuss how the two nations will push preliminary talks to launch formal negotiations for a free trade agreement.

Since 2008, South Korea and China have held a series of joint feasibility studies on a possible free trade deal and reached an agreement to exchange their views on sensitive issues.

The two leaders will also discuss the rising number of Chinese fishing boats caught illegally fishing off South Korea's west coast. Last December, a South Korean coastguard was killed while trying apprehend a Chinese vessel.

Tabloid: John Edwards Seeks to Postpone Trial Due to Heart Attack, Fear of Death!

“HELP ME, I’M DYING!” - John Edwards, according to the National Enquirer

Ever since the aforementioned gossip publication correctly reported the former politician's career-ending affair with Rielle Hunter and subsequent love child scandal, they have continued to pursue its aftermath, with questionable accuracy.

The latest angle: Edwards wants to postpone his upcoming federal trial on corruption charges because he had a heart attack and feels he might die!

“John fell apart in front of a pal after returning from a jog and was afraid he’d die,” says a close source. “His heart began pounding and he was having labored breathing."

"He had many symptoms of a major heart attack and fears he will die.”

The former presidential candidate really did file to postpone his January 30 trial because of an “unexpectedly encountered a medical issue” that will make it “extraordinarily difficult,” allegedly for him to appear in court for his trial.

While the details of his medical situation were filed under seal and can't be reported to the public, a close friend revealed that Edwards was telling pals (he still has friends!) he was suffering from “sleep apnea” and “migraine headaches.”

Sources confirm he does have the potentially deadly sleeping disorder, but the Enquirer insists the chest pains and shortness of breath terrified him.

“John has been very depressed with the upcoming trial and particularly down in the dumps with the holiday season and his young children having to deal with the first anniversary of his wife’s death on December 7,” said the source.

Under tremendous stress, Edwards had “also been drinking too much.”

97% The Artist

I'm stunned by how adeptly this film meshed its style and its content, as either could have easily felt contrived, overly nostalgic, and just plain cheesy had it lacked such grace and boldness. Not only do we get a tribute to the silent film's golden age, complete with its orchestral brilliance and visual camera tricks and gags, but we're completely transfixed by its simple, crystal clear storytelling and gripping emotional journey. The film asks us to do what most modern films take for granted -- make that leap into its world, granted by a suspension of disbelief -- but not just because we aren't used to seeing this kind of film anymore; we're transported due to the powerful visual vocabulary on display, one which pings both halves of our brains as we're forced to work a little harder to make logical sense of what's occurring, all the while having beautiful, tension filled frames poetically entrance our emotional selves. Yes, what I'm describing can (and perhaps should) occur with any film, but only having gone back to the very basics, when films were undiluted by the ease of natural dialogue, can we receive the full artistic impact of this visual medium. And how timely such a film feels even today, as one generation finds itself in constant struggle with the ever-evolving technology of social media and handheld instant communication; how often have we fretted over the surely-hidden meanings behind our own personal "title cards" sent by our friends right into our pockets via text message? If The Artist has a couple weaknesses, they fall in the latter half of the film as we see George Valentin (Jean Dujardin's performance is stellar) dealing with a very complex battle between guilt and pride, particularly as they relate to the talkie star he helped create, Peppy Miller (the perfectly cast Berenice Bejo). At times his descent towards eventual madness felt a little redundant, although a split sequence involving the world's most gut-wrenching onomatopoeic title card builds incredible tension leading up to the film's resolution. The solution offered (I'll try to avoid a spoiler), however, feels somewhat like a cop-out, and I would've rather seen George forced to make an active choice about his future rather than introduce a deus ex machina that falls rather flat. That said, this bittersweet tribute to the grandeur of film is a must watch for everyone who still sits in awe, butterflies in their bellies, every time those lights dim and that feature presentation title card glows on the big screen.
