The future of input: A look at Intel's Perceptual Computing | Chips ...

Over the last year, we?ve seen companies move us ever closer to using our eyes, hands, and voice to control our computers. Now Intel hopes to develop an integrated solution for their products that pulls from all of these developing technologies. They call it perceptual computing.

Facial recognition software, voice commands, eye tracking, and gesture controls are all individual systems that have been slowly evolving for some time now. While voice commands and facial recognition are fairly popular today, eye tracking and (non-touch) gesture controls have been making headlines as well. These latter two offer new input paradigms while will inevitably gain popularity over time ? the ability just glance at the icon you want to click and watch as the program opens is quite appealing, while Microsoft?s Kinect has made it clear that gestures are useful for input.

Intel?s goal moving forward is to offer a comprehensive suite of perceptual computing tools that will make ultrabooks and ultrabook convertibles future proof.

When you think about hand gestures (again, without touching the display) most people think about the Kinect and the upcoming Leap Motion tracker. The idea behind these is to have multiple sensors recording the position of your hand in a 3D space, and then use that information to control the sytem. Instead of touching the screen and swiping from left to right, you just reach out and wave your hand through the air. We?ve seen this kind of interaction work with Kinect, and with Leap Motion being included in ASUS laptops in the future Intel has chosen to invested heavily in competing technology. Developers are currently testing software on a USB-powered 3D camera that offers motion tracking, but Intel hopes to have this tech embedded in ultrabooks to provide this immersive experience.

Intel?s partnership with Nuance has given the company the ability to mold a voice command system of their very own. The Nuance software has been used to interpret human language commands, instead of specific commands. This puts Intel?s voice control system in line with services like Google Now and Apple?s Siri, only on it will be focused on the PC (at least initially, given Intel?s growing interest in mobile).

Intel wants users to be able to launch apps, seamlessly post messages to social media, search the web, and eventually put the computer to sleep or wake it up with a customize-able voice command. Nuance is a driving force behind a lot of voice command technologies right now, including iOS? Siri, which helps identify what to expect from this service.

Facial recognition and eye tracking software open a lot of interesting doors for security and usability in traditional laptops. Facial recognition has been a pipe dream for years, but the ease in which the software can be tricked by a photo or video has stymied the adoption of the technology.

Intel?s use of a 3D camera and anti-spoofing techniques that include muscle measurement and 7-point confirmation hopes to make this technology more viable moving forward. Because the camera is already paying pretty close attention to your face, there?s a push to look at eye tracking as well. As the camera focuses on your eyes, where you are looking on the screen becomes the position of the mouse. As you move around with your eyes, even if you?re moving your head around, the camera and screen work together to keep the mouse in place.

Right now, all of this technology is dependent on external accessories. It?s been a while since most people have felt the need to strap a camera to the top of their laptop screen, but Intel assures us that this is only for development purposes. Once the technology has been embedded into the increasingly slimmer form factors of an ultrabook, these perceptual computing features will become standards that will change how we use computers. Intel has an fascinating vision for the future of interacting with the PC, and this combination of technologies creates a functional gap between smartphones and PC?s.

We walked away from the Samsung press conference with more than just a liveblog brimming with new announcements -- we got our hands on two of the company's new laptops, as well. First up was the refreshed Series 7 Chronos, which as you may know features a slimmer design and an optional touchscreen. Seeing it in person definitely makes it easy to understand why this is one of Sammy's most premium machines; the brushed-metal chassis is elegant in addition to being incredibly svelte. It packs a Core i7-3635QM CPU, and based on our few minutes with the machine performance feels fluid and snappy. Alas, pricing and availability info is still an enigma. Pakistan: Officials say US drones kill 8 militants

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan (AP) ? Several missiles fired from American drones slammed into a compound near the Afghan border in Pakistan early Tuesday, killing eight suspected militants, Pakistan officials said.

The two intelligence officials said the compound was located near the town of Mir Ali in the North Waziristan tribal area.

One of the officials said an al-Qaida operative was believed to have been killed in the strike.

They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

North Waziristan, the area where the strike occurred, is considered a stronghold for insurgent groups operating in both Afghanistan and Pakistan. It is one of the few parts of the tribal areas that border Afghanistan in which the Pakistani military has not conducted a military operation to root out militants, despite repeated pushes to do so from the American government.

Tuesday's strike was the fourth since the new year began.

On Sunday nine Pakistani Taliban fighters were killed when American missiles fired from several drones flying overhead slammed into three militant hideouts in another tribal area, South Waziristan.

The militant in charge of training suicide bombers for the Pakistani Taliban was believed by Pakistan intelligence officials to have died in Sunday's strike.

On Jan. 2, a drone strike killed a top Pakistani militant commander, Maulvi Nazir. He was accused of carrying out deadly attacks against American and other targets across the border in Afghanistan. But unlike most members of the Taliban in Pakistan, he negotiated a truce with the Pakistani military in 2009 and did not attack Pakistani troops or domestic targets.

The U.S.'s covert drone program is extremely controversial in Pakistan where many in the country look at it as an infringement on their sovereignty. Many Pakistanis complain that innocent civilians have also been killed, something the U.S. rejects.

Islamabad officially opposes the use of U.S. drones on its territory, but is believed to have tacitly approved some strikes in past.

?Ultra high def? TVs may be mainstream next year

TV makers have jumped through hoops trying to add new features to TVs in order to win customers who have been, until now, content with the big, cheap, low-on-features flat panels they find at price clubs and big boxes. Smart TV, 3-D TV, TVs with built-in cameras. These have all been tried. But the next innovation, called ?ultra high definition? might be the innovation that will really catch on.

Late last year, Sony and LG begin shipping the first televisions with four times the definition of ordinary HDTV, as 84-Inch models with retail prices of $20,000 to $25,000. This year, nearly every name in TV including Samsung, Panasonic as well as lesser known players Westinghouse, Hisense and others are introducing these Ultra High Definition TVs. Every TV has over 8 million pixels, and screen sizes range from 50 to a whopping 110 inches. Can these super-sized sets create new consumer demand, and encourage the most affluent TV buyers to upgrade?

Why UHD TV?
These new screens are the TV equivalent of the iPhone?s ?Retina? screen: They have pixels so small they are practically invisible, unless you nearly stick your nose up against the screen. And like those super-high-res screens now found on tablets, phones and computers, these serve a purpose even when the content doesn?t have that native resolution.

It will be some time before we can expect to buy or download major motion picture releases in this format, but TV makers have made major improvements in the signal processing called upconversion, which ups any content (standard or high def) to UHD resolution of 3840 x 2160.

From a manufacturing perspective, this seems less like a gimmick and more like a step in the right direction. If you want to make 1080p televisions at larger and larger sizes, you have to keep increasing the size of the individual pixels. With UHD, TVs can be much larger, while the individual pixels remain small ? and sometimes get smaller.

Despite all of this, at HD Guru, we were very skeptical about UHD performance until we tested the LG 84LM9600 84-incher a few weeks ago. One of the issues we?ve had over the last few years was the lack of improvements in the display of standard or HDTV images.

While one can buy a high-def,?Blu-ray disc, many are choosing instead to watch movies with services like Netflix. Web streaming of the same 1080p movie requires compressing the images down to fit over the Internet, and TV makers appeared to halt development of new algorithms and faster CPUs required to improve streamed content. Frankly,?most of it looks pretty bad on any screen 40-inches or larger.

We were blown away by the new signal processing within LGs UHD TV. It aced all our HD test discs and looked fantastic on native high-definition content. Because of the high?pixel density, UHD TV is best when viewed at about half the optimum distance of HDTV. The 84-incher can be viewed as close five and a half feet. As you can imagine, this gives you a totally immersive experience, almost like having an IMAX theater in your house. LG also showed us some native UHD content and we were completely blown away.

3-D perfected
While passive 3-D uses the same lightweight 3-D glasses as most movie theaters, in the home it suffers because it?s just half the resolution of a full HD picture. There?s also annoying line structure, ?cross-talk? ghost images and a lack of brightness. UHD solves all these problems. The LG UHD TV (and we expect all the others) provides the finest 3-D images we?ve seen. It?s so good we recommend readers give 3-D a second look ? when they can get hold of a UHD TV to try out.

Pricing and sales
While the first LG and Sony models are in the stratosphere of TV pricing, even for early adopters, the 2013 entry of smaller panels coupled with competition from Samsung and Chinese LCD panel makers should result in prices dropping quickly through the year and beyond.

You may have heard about another high-end TV technology, OLED. Where does it fit in??LG just announced the price of its 1080p OLED TV as $12,000. OLED may well prove to be the future of TV?display technology, but it will mature over a period of several years before it's priced for anyone but the richest videophiles. UHD will reach maturity faster.

Worldwide sales this year will be limited to around half a million units. However, sales are expected to grow to over 2 million in 2014 and around 4.5 million in 2015, according to TV marketing research firm DisplaySearch. HD Guru predicts US UHD TV pricing will drop to around $4,000 for the smallest screen sizes (50 to 55-inches) by the end of 2013. And because nobody will spend top dollar on a 1080p TV when there?s a better resolution in town, we predict that by next year, all the top TV models will be UHD TV.

Oil falls as uncertainty hits energy markets

BANGKOK (AP) ? Oil prices fell Monday following uncertainty about future action from the U.S. Federal Reserve and data showing the U.S. unemployment rate unchanged.

Benchmark crude for February delivery fell 20 cents to $92.89 per barrel at midday Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract closed up 17 cents at $93.09 a barrel on the Nymex on Friday after the U.S. Energy Department's Energy Information Administration reported a much bigger drop in the nation's crude supplies than analysts expected.

Separately, crude stocks fell by about 12 million barrels for the week ending Dec. 28, according to the American Petroleum Institute.

Monday's decline in oil prices follows the release of a transcript of the Federal Reserve's December meeting showing that policymakers disagreed over how long to keep a bond-purchase program in place.

Traders inferred the Fed might shorten the program, which could send U.S. interest rates, and therefore the dollar, higher. That in turn would hurt the price of oil. Oil, which is priced in dollars, tends to fall as the dollar strengthens and makes crude more expensive for investors holding foreign currencies.

"Crude oil prices have struggled to react with conviction one way or the other," said Michael Hewson, senior market analyst at CMC Markets in an email commentary.

Meanwhile, U.S. employers added 155,000 jobs in December, but the growth wasn't enough to reduce the unemployment rate, which remained 7.8 percent last month, the Labor Department said Friday. The rate for November was revised up from an initially reported 7.7 percent.

Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, rose 16 cents to $111.47 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange:

? Wholesale gasoline rose 0.1 cent to $2.7655 a gallon.

? Heating oil rose 0.3 cents to $3.021 a gallon.

? Natural gas rose 2.4 cents to $3.311 per 1,000 cubic feet.
