Now that Google+ is speeding toward the 200 million user mark, it's rolling out a revamped design that includes a new way to navigate the stream, "conversation cards," and a dedicated Hangouts page.

I checked mine today and I've still got the same old same old, but here's what I and other plussers have to look forward to within a few days, according to the blog post by Google senior vice-president Vic Gundotra:

A "dynamic ribbon of applications on the left" that replaces the "static icons" normally positioned at the upper left, next to the search bar. This new configuration is designed to allow?access to most used or favorite apps faster, and to make it easier to make adjustments as your needs change and/or evolve. The gist of it is you can drag apps in whatever order you want and hover over some "to reveal a set of quick actions." If any annoy you, you can hide them or move them into the "More" category.

G+ also wants to make it easier for its users to scan/join discussions, and you'll soon see "a stream of conversation 'cards'" that are supposed to make this easier. What it looks like is a streamlined feed that will only show you the latest comment under a post, rather than the couple that you see now.

Also in your G+ future: "An activity drawer that highlights the community around your content."

The one thing I think really stands out in G+ are the photos and videos, and the redesign promises "full bleed" images and even bigger and better things with those visual elements. "Simply put, we're hoping to make sharing more awesome by making it more evocative," writes?Gundotra.?"You know that feeling you get when a piece of art takes your breath away, or when a friend stops by with unexpected gifts? We want sharing to feel like that, every single time."

High bar to set, but this is one area whereG+ really shines.?

People who are into Hangouts will probably like that now there's a dedicated page just for that activity. From here, you'll be able to tap any of your friends for impromptu "Hey girl, what's up!" video chats because you'll have a constantly updated list of invites from your buddies. You can also play your own version of Chatroulette and join public and On Air chats more easily, or just watch, if you prefer.

If you find G+ at times a bit overwhelming and hard to wade through, a new Explore page might be the life preserver you need, as it "shows what's interesting and trending across the network."

There are definitely hints of Facebook's latest changes among the new additions, including "a new profile with much bigger photos" that looks a lot like the banner cover photos over on Timeline, as well as "a new chat list that puts your friends front and center" that should look familiar to those who use Facebook chat.

Facebook users who hate Timeline (and we know, there are plenty of you out there) might appreciate the relative simplicity of the G+ profile, which has a lot less clutter than the current Facebook profile.

Boy, 6, dies after getting yanked into wood chipper

A 6-year-old Connecticut boy was killed Tuesday in a tragic accident involving his dad's wood chipper. WVIT-TV's Jeff Saperstone reports.

A 6-year-old Connecticut boy was killed in a tragic accident involving a wood chipper early Tuesday.

Jeffrey Bourgeois, 6, was helping his father clear brush in a client's yard in Salem, Conn., when his arm got stuck in the chipper, state police said.

"The youngest child attempted to help his father and when his father's back was turned, he picked a branch up and fed it into the chipper when he was pulled into the chipper," State Police Lt. Paul Vance said.

The father owns a tree removal service and brought his three children to the house where he was performing tree work.

Police received a 911 call at 8:45 a.m. reporting that reporting a child had been seriously injured in the yard of a private home.?

The fire chief is a neighbor and was the first to respond.

"The family lives right across the street from me.? I saw what we had, and I kept everyone away," said Chief Gene Maiorano.

Officials?are investigating the incident, but they?said it appears to be a tragic accident.

Even though students are off this week, grief counselors will be on hand starting Wednesday.

Teen births continue to drop; Louisiana ranked 6th in nation | NOLA ...

Teen births fell again in the United States in 2010 with the highest rate once more in Mississippi, according to a new government report. Nearly every state saw a decline in teen births from 2007 to 2010, with the biggest drop in Arizona at 29 percent. Rates stayed about the same in three states: Montana, North Dakota and West Virginia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention previously reported that U.S. births by mothers of all ages had dropped in 2010 for the third straight year. Experts think the economy is a factor.

The rate for teenage moms reached its lowest point since record-keeping began in 1940. The rate fell 9 percent to about 34 per 1,000 girls ages 15 through 19. The decline was seen among all racial and ethnic groups.

The CDC report released Tuesday focused on state figures. The authors say the teen declines have been attributed to pregnancy prevention efforts. They note that a recent government survey showed more use of contraception by teens.

Even as it leads the nation with 55 teen births per 1,000 girls, Mississippi's rate has been falling like everywhere else. It dropped 21 percent over three years. New Hampshire has the lowest teen birth rate at just under 16.

Since 1991, the overall teen rate has dropped by 44 percent. Without that decline, the authors calculated, there would have been 3.4 million more babies born to girls by 2010.

"The show is so innovative it's always new," added Lil Mama. "There's always new chemistry. When the crews come onto the show, of course they build a fanbase, but what is more important is that they build a family base," she explained. "They build a family and they become family with one another and when they come out on that stage everything that they go through they go through together as a crew, together as a unit of ABDC and as individuals."

This season, dubbed "Return of the Superstars," will feature nine all-new hip-hop dance crews and one returning past crew, a fan favorite from season two, Fanny Pak. This is the first time in the series' history a crew from a prior season will return to compete for the title. In addition, each episode will have a different theme, built around a popular celebrity artist. Dance crews will be challenged to push themselves to create astonishing performances inspired by the music and persona of the artist of the week. Those artists include Madonna, Britney Spears, Rihanna, Pitbull, David Guetta, Flo Rida and LMFAO, among others.

Lanka to complain to international watchdog about India's nuclear plants

Colombo:? Sri Lanka has expressed concern over possible impact of radiation from India's nuclear power plants located in the southern region, as it prepares to raise the issue with global atomic watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency or IAEA.

The official raising of concern with the IAEA is to be made in September, Sri Lanka's Power and Energy Minister Champika Ranawaka said.

"We respect the right of India to have nuclear power stations. But our concerns are on the possible radiation affects they could have on Sri Lanka. We have already written a letter", Ranawaka said.

The minister also said that Sri Lanka's concerns stem from disasters such as Chernobyl and Fukushima and that the country would work towards achieving guarantees of safety.

Sri Lankan energy officials say at least three nuclear plants are located on the southern coast of Tamil Nadu which is separated from the island by a narrow strip of sea.

The minister said the IAEA had proposed that a mutual agreement on the matter should be reached between the two countries. "We have sent a proposal to India through the External Affairs Ministry and the Indians have sent back a note on the matter," he was quoted as saying by Colombo Page.

According to Ranawaka, the Indian government has sent a proposal to commence a broad based discussion while Sri Lanka wants only to discuss and reach an agreement on a disaster mitigating programme in the event of a nuclear disaster in the South Indian plants, the paper said. Sri Lanka has no nuclear power plants but is just 20 kilometres away from Indian main land at the closest point.

The Kudankulam nuclear plant in India's Southern coast is just 250 km from Sri Lanka's northwest coastal town of Mannar. Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Authority does not possess adequate facilities to face a threat of nuclear accident.
