Six-Wheelers Converge on Goodwood

Just the Facts:
For the first time ever, three historic British six-wheeled Formula 1 racecars will appear together at the 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The trio of six-wheelers include the Tyrrell P34, the March 2-4-0 and the Williams FW08B.

The annual festival runs June 28 to July 1.

GOODWOOD, England ? For the first time ever, three historic British six-wheeled Formula 1 racecars will appear together at the 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed. The annual festival runs June 28 to July 1.

The trio of six-wheelers includes the Tyrrell P34, the March 2-4-0 and the Williams FW08B.

Ken Tyrrell's radical racecar, the only one of the three to feature four front wheels and actually enter a race, competed in 1976-'77, with Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler finishing 1-2 at the 1976 Swedish Grand Prix.

Robin Herd's March Engineering car, tested in 1977, had four wheels in the rear, as did Frank Williams' experimental six-wheeler in 1982, but neither car was ever entered in a race.

A fourth six-wheeler, the Ferrari 312T6, was tested by Niki Lauda and Carlos Reutemann in 1977, but was never entered in competition by the Scuderia.

Six-wheeled cars were effectively banned from F1 in 1983.

Inside Line says: Today it's the Nissan Deltawing, but back in the 70s it was six-wheelers like these that were pushing the limits of racecar engineering.

In today's economy, small businesses are hard-pressed to grow. Advertising is expensive and business owners can't compete with corporate budgets. A brand gets buried in the cacophony of 24/7 marketing messages.

There's an easy, cost-effective way to rise above the noise. It's called speakmarketing.

Speaking levels the playing field because there's little to no cost to giving a presentation. It increases visibility of your brand, establishes your expertise and creates trust because you're up front and personal with potential customers.

Speaking is the new competitive advantage. According to Charlotte Beers, former CEO of Ogilvy & Mathers Worldwide, "Business is one presentation after another." Whether it's an elevator speech to your network, a pitch for funding or a sales presentation, your success depends on how well you present yourself, your message and your value to the market.

With everyone jumping on the social media bandwagon, it's easy to forget the power of high-touch, face-to-face communication. We're connected technologically, but people feel more disconnected than ever. Speaking is a powerful marketing tool because it gives people an experience. To reap the rewards, there are three things you need:

? A defined target market
? Compelling content
? Good platform skills

Defined Target Market

Just like in a tradeshow, your buyer must be there. It's fine to speak at a rotary club if your market is small business. But if your target is senior executives, you're better served speaking at think tanks, round tables and industry conventions.

Compelling Content

How do you draw an audience and keep them there once they've arrived? A well-written announcement can create buzz and increase attendance. People often choose to hear a speaker based on a clever write-up. The secret to attracting a large turnout is the title of your talk. Titles sell. Don't confuse a topic with a title. For example: "All Stressed Out and No One to Choke" is a title that really resonates with the audience and elicits a feeling of being out of control. It's certainly more interesting than "Stress Management 101."

The biggest mistake in speakmarketing is to give a commercial. You must have value to offer today's busy, distracted audiences. The most effective networking presentations are those that offer practical tips and new information that makes people think.

Good platform skills

Even the best content needs to be delivered in a dynamic and compelling way. Remember Ben Stein's teacher in Ferris Bueller's Day Off? If you speak in a monotone and drone on without getting to the point, your audience will take the day off.

Make sure you deliver what you promise. Avoid the bait and switch technique of luring an audience with enticing promotions, only to talk about something that leaves them cold. If you write about saving for your child's college fund, don't suddenly talk about investing in life insurance.

And when you're talking about your product, don't hard sell from the platform -- use the law of attraction. Your call to action should be a free offer that entices people to approach you. For those who don't take advantage of your offer, you can still capture leads by raffling off a promotional item -- a book, a CD, or a sample product. And by the way, people will kill for t-shirts!

Finally, it's not over 'til it's over. Even the best speakers often fail to grow their business because they don't follow up within 24 - 48 hours of the presentation. You spent all that time creating the bait, don't let them off the hook. There's another competing message just around the corner.

Texas Home Building Recovery Has Begun

YES!!! Texas has done it again leading the way to economic gains?housing will no doubt continue to grow as we are seeing many new projects taking off and developers are calling looking for land. This is going to be good for Austin and all of central Texas.

The economy runs in cycles. It expands, and it contracts, and then it begins a new phase of expansion. In typical recessions, new housing construction is one of the early signs of economic recovery.

This recession has lingered. The recovery has been slow, with limited job creation. The lack of single-family home construction is the key reason. Typically, housing leads the economy out of a recession. Low interest rates spark resurgence in home sales and new home construction. New construction jobs create spendable income and a foundation for sustained economic recovery.

As you can see from this chart, new single-family building permits fell from a seasonally adjusted annual peak of 1.8 million to a recent annual rate of 475,000 and have not recovered from that historic trough.

This is why the economic recovery hasn?t rebounded faster. The construction jobs that go along with home building haven?t yet materialized.

However, that is changing in Texas. The number of new one-unit housing permits for the first four months of 2012 is up 17.9 percent from the same time in 2011. There is good news for the rest of the country as well. Permits across the United States in the first four months of 2012 were up 18.7 percent compared with a year earlier.

Let?s look at how home permit volume is increasing among various Texas cities.

Home building has turned the corner. The recovery will be gradual. But in Texas and other states that are producing jobs, new homes will be built. Employment in the construction industry will expand to meet the new production. The multiplier effect for new jobs in construction is powerful.

This appears to be the beginning of the next stage of economic recovery in Texas and the nation.

Microsoft reveals its own Windows 8 tablet: meet the new Surface for Windows RT

Here at its mysterious, last-minute press event in Los Angeles, Microsoft just confirmed it will sell its own Microsoft-branded Windows 8 RT tablet under the Surface badge. Measuring just 9.3mm thick, the Surface for Windows RT is built around an angled, all-magnesium VaporMg case that weighs just under 1.3 pounds, with an NVIDIA-made ARM chip powering the whole affair. Microsoft's hardware partner has also gone all-out on extra touches, such as a built-in stand, twin 2x2 MIMO antennas for WiFi, and a 10.6-inch optically-bonded, Gorilla Glass 2-covered HD display. Not unlike Apple's last two generations, there's a magnetically attached cover, but it's more than just a protector: here, it includes a full multi-touch keyboard and trackpad. As for expansion, you'll get one each of HDMI, microSD and USB 2.0 (sorry folks, no 3.0) as well as either 32GB or 64GB of storage, while software includes the usual Windows 8 accoutrements and a newly Metrofied version of Netflix. The Surface for Windows RT should arrive roughly in step with Windows 8, but Microsoft is only promising pricing "competitive" with similar ARM tablets -- and you're looking for a tablet with more grunt, you can spring for the Intel-packing Surface for Windows 8 Pro.
