House passes bill that would call for a single website tracking federal spending
The last time a proposed law captured our attention it was so widely loathed it was never even put to a vote, but today we bring you the kind of no-brainer legislation that seems to have strong support on both sides of the aisle. The US House of Representatives has passed the Digital Accountability and Transparency Act (DATA), a bill that calls for the creation of an independent board to log all federal spending on a single, centralized website. What's more, these expenses need to be recorded with identifiers and markup languages that make them more easily searchable. As Computerworld notes, the vote happens to come on the heels of a recent dust-up involving the US General Services Administration spending $823,000 on a conference in Vegas -- precisely the sort of excess this proposed website would be designed to expose. The next step, of course, is for the bill to win Senate approval, though for now it seems the legislation has garnered strong bi-partisan support: in a rare showing, all of the lawmakers who discussed the DATA Act on the House floor argued in favor of it.

'Fifty Shades Of Grey': What's In It For 'Hunger Games' Fans?
As the E.L. James novel bumps the dystopian drama from the top of the bestseller list, we ask a few of Panem's faithful if fans should give it a read.

Katniss Everdeen and her trusty bow and arrow can no longer fend off Christian Grey and his punishing whips — "Fifty Shades of Grey" has bumped "The Hunger Games" from its #1 perch on USA Today's bestseller list. And it's a contentious battle, to be sure. Seven of the top 10 are dominated by the various series installments by "Grey" author E.L. James and "Hunger Games" author Suzanne Collins.
It probably goes without saying that the content of these two sagas couldn't be more different: "The Hunger Games" is a teen novel chronicling a young heroine's fight for survival in a televised death match against 23 other kids, while "Fifty Shades of Grey" is an erotically charged page-turner detailing the sexcapades of a billionaire and his young paramour. Yet, both have managed to capture the attention of publishers, producers and pop-culture pundits.
While "The Hunger Games" was busy dominating the box office to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars, Universal Pictures and Focus Features (perhaps inspired by Lionsgate's success with the book-to-film adaptation) snatched up the film rights to James' buzzy novel for an undisclosed sum. A few weeks later, the English author was named to Time 's 100 Most Influential People in the World list.
Full disclosure: I've been hesitant to pick up "Fifty Shades of Grey" owning to its "Twilight" fanfic roots and "mommy porn" reputation, but as someone who writes about both books and films, I'll eventually need to become familiar with the life and times of Christian Grey — for purely professional reasons, of course. But is there anything in it for "Hunger Games" fans looking for another high-profile novel to devour? I asked a few of Panem's faithful.
"I haven't actually read 'Fifty Shades of Grey,' but I confess that way back in the day, when it was called 'Master of the Universe' and was posted for free online as 'Twilight' fan fiction, I did read it," said Hunger Games Examiner's Sara Gundell. "It is a dirty, dirty story — but hey, sometimes filthy fan fiction is fun to read. And while there is plenty of 'Hunger Games' fan fiction online (and plenty of it is also dirty), I'm not sure 'Fifty Shades of Grey' will appeal to most fans of 'The Hunger Games' based on what attracted them to that series. There isn't really any way to compare the two. They don't have similar themes, and the characters don't share any similar traits. They really are nothing alike. That doesn't mean some 'Hunger Games' fans won't enjoy it, but I can't see it having any sort of universal, crossover appeal. They just don't have anything in common, really."
For MTV News staffer Christina Garibaldi, the saucy series served as a palate cleanser after the death and destruction of the dystopian drama.
"As a reader of both 'The Hunger Games' and 'Fifty Shades of Grey,' I have to admit I'm a huge fan of both," she said. "Both stories have taken their audiences by storm, but keep in mind that 'Fifty Shades of Grey' does skew a little older and to women, while 'Hunger Games' seems to please both male and female readers. Yet, if you are anything like me and enjoy mixing up your reading between love stories and action novels, then pick up both books! You will not be disappointed."
Then there's The Hob's Megan Scott, who says she sees at least one (tongue firmly in cheek) similarity: hunger.
"I have been sucked into the 'Fifty Shades' vortex and am enjoying it immensely," she said. "Anything that is getting a lot of hype and is considered controversial I'll pick up. There really is nothing that really comes to mind that would intrigue an "HG" fan other than the common theme of hunger, but let's face it, Christian Grey's hunger is the different sort."
Consensus: While the two best-selling series share very little in common thematically, odds are in your favor that "Grey" may be as hard to put down as "The Hunger Games."

Best Buy Connect no longer accepting new activations, service to end June 1st (update: confirmed)
Remember Best Buy Connect? If so, you'll soon have a few more megabytes of humanized DDR3 freed up, as it appears that the retail giant is ready to put the kibosh on its own branded mobile broadband service nearly two years after it was first unveiled. According to the internal memo shown in the above screenshot, new activations are no longer allowed effective immediately, and the service for legacy customers will be cut off on the first of June.
So why the change of heart? Apparently Connect is the victim of a reshuffling of priorities, and the company determined that it "can achieve greater growth by delivering mobile broadband support in ways other than an exclusive Best Buy-branded service." Of course, this is bound to upset more than a handful of folks who have been relying on Connect for their data needs, and the retailer isn't leaving them completely in the dark: to help smooth out the transition, all Early Termination Fees will be waived, and all customers will receive a $125 or $150 gift card via email to curb the cost of moving to a different carrier. WiMAX Connect users, additionally, will also be given the option to switch over to Clear service. We're still awaiting official confirmation from Best Buy -- as of this moment, the official website remains up and running as if it's none the wiser -- but we'll update as soon as we hear more.
Update: Best Buy has now officially confirmed to us that the service will indeed be shut off on June 1st.
[Thanks, Anonymous]

Myanmar exiles urge US to seek more reforms
WASHINGTON (AP) ? The European Union's suspension of economic sanctions against Myanmar has riled exiled activists, who are urging the United States to press for further reforms by the dominant military before following suit.
The activists' opposition has exposed differences with democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, whose cause they have championed for more than two decades, which helped drive the sanctions in the first place.
Suu Kyi endorsed the EU move during a visit by British Prime Minister David Cameron to Yangon this month, but the activists are skeptical that sanctions could be re-imposed if Myanmar, also known as Burma, should backslide on the reforms. They say despite Suu Kyi winning a seat in parliament and the government reaching cease-fires with several ethnic armed insurgencies, the changes have yet to affect the lives of most citizens and rampant rights abuses continue.
"The EU has suspended sanctions knowing that its own benchmarks on Burma have not been met: the unconditional release of all political prisoners and a cessation of attacks against ethnic minorities," Soe Aung of the Forum for Democracy in Burma said by e-mail from Thailand. He accused the bloc of rushing to reward "murky reforms."
"It's illogical and a little hypocritical," Aung said.
While the influence of Myanmar activists who escaped the country in the years following a 1988 crackdown on democracy protesters is waning as the country opens up, they remain players in the debate. Last week, a group of them were lobbying opinion-makers in Washington, including at the State Department and the World Bank.
They say foreign investment before rule of law is established in the impoverished country would do more harm than good and benefit only the military and its cronies, who dominate the most lucrative sectors of the economy, such as timber, gemstones, oil and gas. Most of those resources are in, and need to be transported through, remote, ethnic-minority regions where hundreds of thousands of villagers have been displaced by fighting and where military abuses have been worst.
The Obama administration has taken those concerns on board. While the U.S. has led the charge in engaging Myanmar, it is moving more slowly than the EU in lifting sanctions. It is upgrading diplomatic ties and plans to allow U.S. investment in some sectors, but only in areas it judges would benefit the broader population.
Congressional committees that oversee U.S. policy toward Asia will take up the issue this week, hearing testimony by senior officials from the State Department, the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Treasury Department.
Khin Ohmar, coordinator of Burma Partnership, a coalition of pro-democracy activists based in several Asian countries, said despite relaxation of restrictions on media and peaceful protests in Myanmar, the military still can act with impunity.
"People talk about President Thein Sein being reform-minded. That may be true. There's always been reform-minded people, even under the repressive system. But what we need in Burma is institutional changes, not changes based on personalities," she said in Washington.
She said the litmus test of political reform would be 2015 national elections, when the military's control of parliament will be challenged. Even after winning 43 of the 45 seats contested in recent special elections, Suu Kyi's party still controls fewer than 7 percent of the seats, and refused to take them up when parliament convened Monday due to a dispute over a single word in the oath of office ? a sign of the formidable hurdles that remain in political reconciliation.
Western governments maintain it's important to act now to reward Thein Sein's government and to weaken the hand of conservatives in the military who oppose the democratic reforms.
The EU announced Monday it was suspending most of its sanctions, except an arms embargo, for six months to a year while it assesses the country's progress. The restrictions currently target more than 800 companies and nearly 500 people. Last week, Japan said it would take steps to forgive about $3.7 billion of Myanmar's debt and resume full-fledged development aid.
Former political prisoner Aung Din of the U.S. Campaign for Burma, who will testify at one of this week's U.S. congressional hearings, says once Western businesses move into Myanmar it will be difficult to reverse the sanctions, and democracy advocates will lose leverage over the military. He questioned whether Suu Kyi and her party were properly informed of the risks before she endorsed the EU move.
Since the special elections, the U.S. has eased financial sanctions to allow private groups to do charity work in Myanmar, and is soon expected to open the way for investment in sectors such as agriculture, tourism, banking and finance. One influential lawmaker, Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., has suggested easing trade sanctions too.
Despite abiding Republican skepticism about the administration's willingness to reach out to authoritarian governments, the most influential lawmakers from both parties on Myanmar policy have broadly endorsed Obama's approach ? a rare example of bipartisanship in Washington.
"To most observers on the outside, it's clearly time to negotiate a transition here," said Priscilla Clapp, a former charge d'affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Yangon. "You can't be so hard-nosed as not to compromise."

Harvard tired of overpaying for research, tells faculty to open up
The grand dame of Ivy League schools is taking action against one of higher learning's pet peeves: the exorbitant price of research journals. Even though the e-reader revolution may have already touched other schoolbooks, so far academic subscription prices -- with some journals as high as $40,000 -- are becoming unsustainable, according to Harvard. To that end, it's taking the lead and pushing its own faculty toward open access publishing, and encouraging them to quit boards of journals that aren't. That could in turn prod other schools to take the same steps, and allow Harvard to focus on more, ahem, interesting pursuits.

Exclusive: Teresa Giudice Apologizes: "I Miss My Friends And Family"
As she watched the April 22 premiere of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, Teresa Giudice longed to turn back the hands of time. Here were the women she was once closest to ? now all discussing how much they can?t stand her. ?Things have gotten out of hand,? Teresa admits to In Touch. ?I want to accept responsibility for the things I did wrong. I?m truly sorry.?
Teresa?s tearful olive branch stems from an epiphany she had while playing for a charity on Celebrity Apprentice. ?All of this drama seemed insignificant after I was exposed to people with real problems.? And so, in an attempt to bury the hatchet, Teresa, 39, has written open letters to Jacqueline, Melissa, Kathy and Caroline. ?I wish I could take it all back and start over,? she confesses.
In her open letter to Jacqueline, Teresa writes, "Dear Jacqueline, I wish we could have resolved things sooner because I?m sincerely sorry for up setting y ou ? and I?m sorry I didn?t respond to your apology on Twitter. I feel like things have gotten out of hand, which is sad. I miss our friendship. I miss being like Lucy and Ethel with you. And so I hope we can work through these problems one day, when you are ready. Teresa xoxo"

New technique may help severely damaged nerves regrow and restore function
ScienceDaily (Apr. 22, 2012) ? Engineers at the University of Sheffield have developed a method of assisting nerves damaged by traumatic accidents to repair naturally, which could improve the chances of restoring sensation and movement in injured limbs.
In a collaborative study with Laser Zentrum Hannover (Germany) published April 23, 2012 in the journal Biofabrication, the team describes a new method for making medical devices called nerve guidance conduits or NGCs.
The method is based on laser direct writing, which enables the fabrication of complex structures from computer files via the use of CAD/CAM (computer aided design/manufacturing), and has allowed the research team to manufacture NGCs with designs that are far more advanced than previously possible.
Currently patients with severe traumatic nerve damage suffer a devastating loss of sensation and/or movement in the affected limb. The traditional course of action, where possible, is to surgically suture or graft the nerve endings together. However, reconstructive surgery often does not result in complete recovery.
"When nerves in the arms or legs are injured they have the ability to re-grow, unlike in the spinal cord; however, they need assistance to do this," said University of Sheffield Professor of Bioengineering, John Haycock. "We are designing scaffold implants that can bridge an injury site and provide a range of physical and chemical cues for stimulating this regrowth."
The new conduit is made from a biodegradable synthetic polymer material based on polylactic acid and has been designed to guide damaged nerves to re-grow through a number of small channels.
"Nerves aren't just like one long cable, they're made up of lots of small cables, similar to how an electrical wire is constructed," said lead author Dr Frederik Claeyssens, of the University's Department of Materials Science and Engineering. "Using our new technique we can make a conduit with individual strands so the nerve fibres can form a similar structure to an undamaged nerve."
Once the nerve is fully regrown, the conduit biodegrades naturally. The team hopes that this approach will significantly increase recovery for a wide range of peripheral nerve injuries.
In laboratory experiments, nerve cells added to the polymer conduit grew naturally within its channelled structure and the research team is now working towards clinical trials.
"If successful we anticipate these scaffolds will not just be applicable to peripheral nerve injury, but could also be developed for other types of nerve damage too. The technique of laser direct writing may ultimately allow production of scaffolds that could help in the treatment of spinal cord injury" said Dr Claeyssens.
"What's exciting about this work is that not only have we designed a new method for making nerve guide scaffolds which support nerve growth, we?ve also developed a method of easily reproducing them through micromolding.
"This technology could make a huge difference to patients suffering severe nerve damage," he added.
This research was funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

Many MSPs Still Lack Solutions for Backup and Recovery ...
While half of MSPs are planning to offer an offsite backup and recovery solution, the majority have not taken steps?to support their plans, according to a?recent informal survey conducted by?Modular Data Protection Services?(DPS) Inc, a company that works with cloud data protection. Modular DPS surveyed resellers of Intel AppUp Small Business Service from ?Intel Corp.
After surveying a range of MSPs, Modular DPS ?found that remote monitoring and management services was the first most popular focus area for MSPs (55.6 percent). Disaster recovery and business continuity planning came in second with 44.4 percent, while offsite data backup and recovery services placed in third with 42.1 percent.
Also, out of the 50 percent of MSPs that offer disaster recovery and business continuity planning services, only 26.3 percent of them also offer offsite data backup and recovery services. A statistic of this measures leaves us with questions. What does that means for today?s market, and how does that affect MSPs as a whole?
Modular DPS has introduced the?Modular 360 Partner Program, which?provides partners and their customers with a turnkey data protection solution that combines the necessary data protection software, materials, service document templates, and ongoing support. The solution?also includes access to the Intel AppUp?Small Business Service, which runs on the Intel?Hybrid Cloud Platform.

Although the tabloid media has been obsessing over Megan Fox for years — ever since she made her blockbuster debut in the 2007 moneymaker "Transformers" — they'll have a whole new reason to pay close attention to the star for the next few months: The 25-year-old is reportedly pregnant with her first child.
According to E! Online, Fox is expecting a bundle of joy with husband Brian Austin Green. The new addition to their family will be the second child for Green, who also has a 10-year-old son, Kassius, with ex Vanessa Marcil.
MTV News reached out to Fox's reps for comment but have yet to receive confirmation.
The news might not come as a surprise to the folks over at Star magazine, who initially broke the story about Fox's pregnancy in late March via a source close to the couple. "They just found out and are incredibly excited," a source told Star at the time. "Megan has become a great stepmom, and Brian knows she'll be wonderful with the baby."
The "Friends With Kids" star has also stated publicly that she is eager to become a mother. "I want at least two, probably three kids," the actress said in a recent interview with Cosmopolitan magazine. "I've always been maternal."
Fox and Green met while filming the sitcom "Hope and Faith" back in 2004 and the pair were married in Hawaii in June 2010. The actress has said their relationship works because they are best friends. "I feel like I'm with my best friend," she told MTV News about Green. "I've been with him for so long, so it feels natural and comfortable."

Debug faulty radio :) - All About Circuits Forum
no, not placing next to it, it would need to be physically connected. for example tie commons of both devices together, then use another wire and small cap as a "probe". one side of the probe can be attached to low impedance of the healthy radio (maybe right before detector). this way healthy tradio will not be loaded much by the "probe" and whatever else probe connects to. actually you may need to attenuate it too (RF output from healthy radio to cap, potentiometer, and another cap to a piece of wire acting as touch probe).
you are right, that was the typo, should be pin24 (AM input).
also the other it can be 19 too (in general input of IF stage is more sensitive to injected signal).
at any rate, if you construct little test probe as described, you are free to probe anywhere on the test subject without fear, there is no risk of damaging anything (actually i should take this back, while any damage is unlikely, i have no experience with this particular IC so theoretically, risk is always there). can you post circuit of your transmitter? if you used something that relies on spark gap then yes, damage is possible. if you did some small battery operated circuit, that would be very unlikely even if you made sort of connections as mentioned here as test probe.
it need to be point before the tuned LC circuit or there will be no way to tell the difference while trying to make any adjustment. general idea is to work backwards and setup one stage at a time, then move to previous one.
note that AGC will work against you, as you tune it better, signal is stronger and AGC will try to compensate by reducing gain. this is meant to preserve signal shape or too strong stations would be amplified too much (clipping destroys the envelope information).
good luck

Google Wallet updated with improvements and enhancements across the board
Google Wallet has seen another update, and this time Google has made all sorts of improvements and enhancements to the app. Per the change log in the Google Play store:
- Prepaid Card top up forms more flexible
- Citi Mastercard management improvements
- UI improvements
- Privacy enhancements
- Bug fixes
- Updated Terms of Service
The most interesting, on the surface anyway, would be the UI improvements. They must be very subtle, because we're not really seeing any. It's the same fluid and simple UI that has been there for a while, and while we're not complaining, we just don't see any improvements. We're pretty sure that some of this change log is just leftover from the last update. It's OK, Google. We all slip.
We can certainly get on board with improvements, though. Bug fixes are always welcome, as are privacy enhancements. Anything to keep our money safer is a good thing. You'll also be faced with the new terms when you update, and we suggest you read them carefully. There's nothing there you wouldn't expect, but it's always wise to stay informed.
All the ballyhoo aside, we expect the biggest thing behind this update are new privacy enhancements and bug fixes, and we're glad to see them. You'll find your update in the market, or you can hit the link after the break.
Thanks, Beezy!

Video: Bloomberg: Stand Your Ground has made America less safe
During a press conference, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, I-NYC, addressed the Stand Your Ground law calling it ?vigilantism? saying it?s done harm to public safety. Bloomberg talks about the launch of a nationwide campaign urging legislators to reform, repeal, or defeat the Stand Your Ground laws.
>> in new york. with he have michael blum berg and members of the naacp talking about the stand-your-ground law and the fact that more than 20 other states have similar laws that they're referring to as second chance on shoot first. let's listen in.
>> succeed in pushing the bill through the legislature over the objections of leading police and law enforcement leaders. since then the nra managed to spread this law to 24 other states telling legislators this would make their communities safer. it didn't turn out that way. we now have the data to prove it. in reality, the nra leaders weren't interested in public safety . they were interested in promoting culture where people take the law into their own hands and face no consequences for it. call it by its real name, villageal ant at theism. they have under mine the integrity of the justice system and have some confusion in police departments about when to make arrests. they made it more difficult for prosecutors to bring charges in cases of deadly violence and the stand your ground states have seen a major increase in justifiable homicides. these laws have not only made our -- have not made our country safer. they have made us less safe. that's why so many law enforcement leaders oppose these laws. it is why some legislators who voted for these laws are having second thoughts. it is why today we're launching a nationwide campaign urging legislators to take these steps. reform or repeal these laws where they have been passed or defeat them in states where they have been introduced. the fact is all americans already have a right to defend themselves with commensurate force but these shoot first laws have nothing to do with that or the exercise of second amendment rights. instead, they justify civilian gun play and invite vigilante justice with disastrous results. the strongest law of all is one that is never on the books, the law of unintend the consequences. stand-your-ground laws prove that's true and demonstrated by the widely reported increase in what are deemed justifiable homicides and stand your ground states . look what happened in three major states during comparable periods before and after stand your grounds passed. before stand-your-ground laws became law in florida, the state averaged 12 cases of justifiable homicide per year. since the law was passed, the average has been 36, three times higher. pre- stand your ground georgia averaged 7 a year and since 14 a year and texas averaged 26 the year before passing a stand-your-ground law and since the law passed, the 45 per year. no matter how the state of florida investigates into the shooting --
>> we're listening to the mayor of new york city joined by a number of leaders in washington, d.c. who want to see the stand-your-ground laws in 24 other states , including florida, to be over turned. in the meanwhile, let me
