How to Overcome Hesitation - Personal Growth

He Who Hesitates is Lost - How to Overcome Hesitation

Many people missed opportunities and don't get what they want because they hesitate to make the important decision or to take the necessary action. Not wanting something bad enough and the lack of self confidence are two possible reasons for hesitation.

As they delay further to make corrective actions and to take the next step, their dreams will die a sudden death. They may never get the chance to experience the joy and pleasures of accomplishments unless they change their beliefs and attitudes.

It is necessary to reflect and examine the consequences before taking action. But if you take too much time thinking and deliberating, your self talk or inner critic will win over and you will end up sabotaging yourself and stop from taking action.

"Do not vacillate or postpone. Who knows when death knocks. Maybe, he may knock this very night, this very moment; therefore, do not delay. Do you postpone for tomorrow the dinner of this day." - Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Gather Knowledge and Develop Skills

One of the reasons for your delay in making decisions and doing what you should is because of lack of knowledge or information to make good judgment. Lack of skills is also another problem that is holding you back and making you slow to act. Because of your lack of knowledge and skills, you don't have enough choices and options.

One of the solutions to overcome hesitation is to educate yourself. You can find the topic of your interest from books, the internet and video and audio programs. You can ask those who know what you don't.

Know Your Purpose

If you have been reluctant to take action in spite of having listed your goals, probably it's because you don't have big enough reasons to want them. Ask yourself why you want to achieve them. Check your list and find out if they are yours or are you trying to fulfill other people's needs. Focus on what you want and not on imaginary hurdles. Visualize and picture the outcome of having achieved them.

Push Doubts and Fears

Are your fears making you hesitate? Your fears of feeling humiliated, of not getting the approval and of failing and making mistakes will create mental roadblocks. Once you accept these obstacles as true, your mind will freeze and stop you from thinking and doing the right things. Your doubts and fears will destroy your ambition. In order to overcome your fears you must recognize them, question their validity and break them apart and challenge them.

Change Your Attitude

Being accountable and taking personal responsibility are the attitudes that you must develop to overcome hesitation. Waiting around for the right time and the right person to show up before you make a decision or act is a waste of time. You have to accept the fact that you are responsible for your life. You are the only person who will lose from being indecisive and uncertain and letting an opportunity pass by.

Create Urgency

When you hesitate to do what you must do, you put your life on hold. One of the ways to create a sense of urgency is to give yourself a deadline. Give yourself an ultimatum by linking pain to not doing what you should or must do. By creating a sense of urgency, you will focus your attention and act in spite of your fears. It helps if you visualize the end result and imprint your goal in your mind.
