What is sideloading? [Android A to Z]

Android A to Z: Sideloading

What is sideloading?  It's a term you see a lot thrown around while talking about Android applications, and it's simple to explain.  It means installing applications without using the official Android Market.  What's less simple is how it's done and why you would do it.  That's where this post comes in.  Let's explain it, shall we?

How to do it is easy enough, so let's start there.  In the Application settings on your Android phone, you'll find a check box to "Allow installation of non-Market applications."  When it's checked, you can sideload.  You'll also see a pop-up warning when you check this box letting you know that your phone is now more vulnerable to attacks from applications, and that you accept all the responsibility that comes with doing this.  It makes sense -- you can't hold Google responsible for applications you didn't download through their service using their security methods.

Sideloading apps is easy to do as well.  You download them to your phone, then use a file manager application to find them and "click" their entry.  You'll invoke the app installer program, and it will install your app just as if it had came from the trusted Android Market.  It won't be associated with your Android Market account, but it shows in your app drawer just like all the rest.  It didn't used to be this easy for everyone.  Under the guise of security, AT&T used to block users from sideloading by removing the Unknown sources field in the device settings.  Whenever you tried to manually install an app, it would be blocked because it wasn't allowed.  This could be circumvented by using adb from the SDK or by using a program like the Sideload Wonder Machine.  Luckily, those days are past us and AT&T has re-evaluated their position, and now allows the installation of non-Market apps.

Why would you want to sideload.  There are several reasons, one being that Google has allowed carriers to block certain applications based on the model and network your device is running on.  We've seen carriers block apps that permit tethering without paying the extra associated fees, and some carriers have exclusives for certain apps and they aren't available for the others.  That's a whole other mess that we'll tackle in another post -- just know that it happens.  There are other reasons to need to sideload apps, too.  Want to use a different appstore like the one from Amazon?  You'll need to enable sideloading.  The same goes for beta testing apps for developers, or even coding your own apps and testing them on your phone.  There are a lot of legitimate reasons for sideloading.  Of course, there's always the piracy aspect.  If you want to steal from hard working developers you'll need to enable sideloading.  You also suck.  Sideload, but don't steal from developers.

Kiev blames Moscow for Europe gas cutbacks (AP)

KIEV, Ukraine ? Ukraine's government is blaming Russia for natural gas shortages in some European countries as a severe cold spell grips the region.

Fuel and Energy Minister Yuri Boiko said Friday that Russia was shipping some 15 percent less gas than usual because of increased domestic consumption due to the cold weather.

Germany, Italy and Austria have reported cutbacks in Russian gas supplies, but Russia's energy giant Gazprom has blamed them on Kiev, accusing Ukraine of siphoning off gas destined for European consumers.

Gazprom declined comment Friday.

wedding dance expert | Home & Garden

wedding dance expertI?m Mary Pinizzotto, your wedding dance expert. I?ve been teaching dance since 1990. I?ve taught hundreds of people to dance for their weddings. Now I?ve taken all that I?ve learned as a dance professional and turned it into a fun, easy way for you to move as one and impress all your friends and family with your first wedding dance, without ever setting foot in a dance studio!

Scroll down to met some of my students and find out how you can get started dancing right away ? no waiting!

Of course you would! After all, the minister performs the vows, but your chance to perform comes when that first dance is announced. It?s so important that you look and feel fabulous.

With all your friends and family looking on, the first dance is your chance to show everyone what a perfect couple you really are. (And I?ll let you in on a secret right now: dancing is lovemaking, set to music. So making that first dance great is an awesome way to start your whole relationship off on the right foot!)

Dear Mary, I just wanted to say thank you, thank you for adding so much to our wedding! Learning to dance with you before our big day not only amazed our guests, but gave us a new, fun activity to do together for the rest of our lives. I think my husband was a little cautious to begin with, but after the first lesson he realized how much he was enjoying himself. I?ve always loved to dance and am grateful to you for teaching us how to glide across the floor together! Thanks again! Karen

When everyone asks, "Where did you find the time to learn to dance like that? "you don?t have to admit that you learned a simple system, right in your own home. They?ll be so impressed, and I promise not to tell! Let?s face it: even if you could convince your fiance to go and take dance lessons, you don?t have time for them. Luckily for you, you don?t need them. All you need to learn are a few (very!) simple elements that you can easily learn at home, and a way to combine them in a simple system that will have you looking fabulous, fast. As a competitive dancer, I spent countless hours learning complex steps and patterns. Hours in the studio? I?ve been there, done that. Ego-shattering coaches? I could tell you stories! And I?ve danced before panels of super-critical judges, all looking for the slightest mistake, so I know all about being anxious when it comes to dancing in public. You know what made all that worthwhile? Becoming confident in my abilities made performing incredibly fun and rewarding. Instead of worrying about performing, I lived for it. As a professional dance instructor, I?ve taught hundreds of couples just like you to dance beautifully at their weddings. But the most important thing about my experience isn?t what I?ve taught; it?s what I?ve learned. And now I?m offering the most important things I?ve learned to you. Within a few days of downloading my system, after a few short, easy practice sessions, you?ll relish the chance to dance. You?ll be confident, you?ll be graceful, you?ll be perfectly synchronized, and you?ll know everything you need to know to dance like the perfect couple! All you need to know, to dance like stars at your wedding, are a few simple principles of balance, posture, rhythm and movement that you can learn in a few minutes. Then, you?ll combine these easy elements in a simple system.

You?re probably going to video your dance and preserve it forever: all the more reason to make sure that in years to come, when you watch it, you think "Wow, we do look good." And by the way, I?d love to see your dance; Would you, could you, please send me a copy of your video so I can celebrate with you?

Everyone at the reception will be sure you had to memorize complicated step patterns. From the outside looking in, it will seem as though you must have studied for months to dance so effortlessly. Nope! It was easy. But you know what?s even better? From the inside, it feels as good as it looks.

To follow my unique system, you need to be able to count to four. Oh, I suppose I have to admit that you need a few other things. Like, you need to want to connect-really connect-with your partner. You need to want to express your love in a beautiful, physical way. It helps if you want to have fun and turn each other on a bit, too.

Before you can dance with grace and poise, you need to be able to stand, breathe, and take a step with grace and poise. The good news is, I?ll show you a few simple exercises that will allow you to do that within minutes of downloading my system. Not only will you look great dancing once you understand these principles, you?ll look great everywhere else, too. Frankly, I?m surprised how many people spend hundreds (even thousands!) of dollars on dance lessons but who never learn the basics. Lots of teachers go right into "teaching the steps" as though they were building a house with no foundation!

Your wedding song is almost certainly a rhumba, a foxtrot or a waltz. (If you don?t know which it is yet, don?t worry, because when you download my system, you?ll learn how to tell them apart in a few minutes. It could hardly be any easier, but it is: I?ll also give you a list of the most popular "first dance" songs and break them out by type.) No matter what style of dance your song calls for, it?s based on a simple box step. If your fiance can walk down a sidewalk and step around a parking meter, he can lead you in a box step. Really, it?s that easy. And after? Read more?

Tinnitus : and how to live with it | ArticleGoes - Free Dofollow Article ...

Tinnitus is sounds in the ear or head, for example a ringing or buzzing sound. Some people suffer from violent tinnitus. Unfortunately, there is no cure for tinnitus, but it is possible to learn to live with the condition.

Many people suffer from tinnitus, some more than others. Some can live with the small amount of tinnitus they have while others suffer from such violent tinnitus that it is difficult to live with. Unfortunately, there is no cure for tinnitus, and once you have tinnitus, it has come to stay.

Tinnitus is sounds in the ear and head which come from an external source. The sound can be a ringing, buzzing or whistling which can be more or less intense. Everybody has experienced temporary tinnitus, but those who suffer from tinnitus have the sounds in their head and ears 24 hours a day. Most experience their tinnitus when they are not around other sounds, for example in the evening and at night when they want to sleep.

Some learn to live with their tinnitus, while others have trouble dealing with these phantom sounds. Some can experience emotional problems or even depression.

Causes of tinnitus

It is thought that most cases of tinnitus are caused by noise, for example music. Other causes can be some types of medicine, M?ni?re?s disease, stress and head injuries. Tinnitus is often accompanied by a large or minor hearing loss. If you also have a larger hearing loss, hearing aids are often recommended ? both because they improve hearing but also because they can dull the tinnitus to a degree.

If you have tinnitus, there are some coping strategies which can be used. Often, it is a question of avoiding noise and stress. Some benefit from avoiding cigarettes, coffee and alcohol, while others benefit from a tinnitus masker.

Many people have found Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) to help. Tinnitus Retraining Therapy is a method by which one learns to live with and disregard one?s tinnitus. All around the world, courses are offered in learning to live with tinnitus.

Protect your hearing

As previously mentioned, there is no cure for tinnitus, even though some try to sell herbal remedies and other forms of treatment.

The best thing is to try and avoid getting tinnitus. The best way to do this is to take care of your hearing and especially avoid loud noises, for example loud music. This can be done by wearing earplugs to concerts and turning down your iPod or MP3-player. If you work in a noisy environment, it is a good idea to use hearing protection, both at work and in your free time.

Marlins ready for big jump

Additions of Reyes, Bell, Buehrle will help Florida make huge leap

The addition of leadoff hitter Jose Reyes helps make Marlins a likely bet for the most improved in 2012, NBCSports.com contributor Tony DeMarco writes.

Baseball Expert Tony DeMarco has been covering the big leagues since 1987, and been casting Hall of Fame ballots for the last 12 years. He answers questions weekly here:

Q: Who will be this year's surprise team, ala the 2011 Diamondbacks? Do you view the Pirates and Nationals as candidates this season?
-- Alan Quellmalz, Lapeer, Mich.

A: The Diamondbacks' 29-game improvement ? from 65 wins in 2010 to 94 in 2011 ? is quite rare, and I don't think any team will make that big of a leap in 2012.

To me, the Marlins have the best chance for major improvement from their 72-90 finish in 2011. Several factors are working in their favor, led by the signings of shortstop/leadoff hitter Jose Reyes, No. 2 starter Mark Buehrle and closer Heath Bell.

Next, look at how little they received from their two stars in 2011: Ace Josh Johnson made only nine starts and pitched only 60 1/3 innings, while Hanley Ramirez batted only .243 with 10 homers and 45 RBIs and a .379 slugging percentage in 92 games.

Plug in typical seasons from those two, and the impact in runs prevented and runs scored could be dramatic. The Marlins finished with a -77 run differential in 2011, fourth-worst in the NL.

It's also reasonable to expect increased production from emerging young sluggers Mike Stanton and Logan Morrison ? especially with Reyes, underrated Emilio Bonifacio and Ramirez probably hitting in front of them. Throw in Gaby Sanchez and a potential return to form by Chris Coghlan, and the lineup is filled with a combination of power and speed, although light in on-base percentage.

It's impossible to know how the new stadium will play, but there's little doubt that at least for a season, there will be a new buzz and excitement for Marlins' home games, and that has to have a positive affect.

Lastly, we'll see the impact that Ozzie Guillen has on the club. Nothing against Edwin Rodriguez or Jack McKeon, but there are increased expectations with Guillen's presence. There also is a volatile mix of personalities in the clubhouse, and that could either work or backfire.

In the American League, the Central is wide open after the Tigers, so I could see the Royals making a significant jump in wins. Their 2011 run differential of -32 suggested a better record than their 71-91 finish ? perhaps an additional 6-7 wins ? and they played just a shade under .500 in the second half.

They'll score plenty of runs, even without Melky Cabrera, whose loss should be offset by increased production from the emerging young nucleus of hitters. The question will be how much better the pitching will be in 2012. Jonathan Sanchez is the obvious key addition, and the call here is for Luke Hochevar to take the next step after posting a 3.52 ERA in the second half of 2011.

I do like what the Nationals have done in adding Gio Gonzalez to emerging Jordan Zimmerman, and what we hope will be a healthy Stephen Strasburg. Ryan Zimmerman missed 61 games in 2011, so expect a big numbers jump from him, but they still seem to be a bit short offensively. The other factor working against them is how good the NL East should be, with only the Mets in a rebuilding phase.

The Pirates' horrible second half of 2011 scares me off them as far as making a significant jump to well above .500 ? although the NL Central is ripe for movement with the Brewers likely to fall back. It also won't shock me if the Dodgers are serious contenders in the NL West, after how Don Mattingly held things together in a 41-28 second half amidst all the ownership chaos.

Q: Could the Giants send Barry Zito, Aubrey Huff and utilityman Emmanuel Burress to the Angels for Torii Hunter? The Angels would get a fifth starter, a left-handed-hitting 1B/DH to spell Albert Pujols and a switch-hitting IF/OF. The Giants would get a legitimate defensive player, right-handed hitter who could play CF or RF in AT&T Park. Could it work?
? Robert Pyper, Phoenix

A: My guess is you're a Giants fan, Robert, because this would be one-sided in their direction. Although the Angels do need a fifth starter, nobody will take Zito's contract ($46 million guaranteed remaining) unless the Giants pay a significant portion of it.

The Angels already have a backlog of 1B/DH types in Pujols, Kendrys Morales and Mark Trumbo ? not to mention OF/DH Bobby Abreu ? so there's no need for Huff. In fact, if Morales is healthy enough to contribute this season ? and we won't know until spring training ? the Angels probably will have to move Abreu.

Although Hunter's contract also is pricey, 2012 is the final guaranteed year at $18 million, and the Angels are built to win now, so he won't be going anywhere this season. He's a key component both on the field and in the clubhouse.

Filmmaker arrested during House hearing on shale gas (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The director of a documentary that portrays shale gas production as dangerous was arrested and escorted out of a Republican-dominated Congressional hearing on Wednesday, touching off a dispute over public access to the hearing.

Capitol Police handcuffed Josh Fox, director of the Oscar-nominated documentary Gasland, and led him out of a House science committee room after he refused to stop filming.

Republicans in charge of committee said Fox did not have credentials to tape the hearing, which was already being broadcast live on the Internet.

The hearing focused on an Environmental Protection Agency draft report that found an aquifer in Wyoming was likely polluted by fluids from hydraulic fracturing, the drilling technique that was the subject of Fox's controversial Gasland documentary.

Rep. Brad Miller, the top Democrat on the science subcommittee, objected to the decision to eject Fox. He said Republicans had also blocked an ABC News crew from filming the hearing because they did not request to film in advance.

"All those rules are to control access," said Miller, who made a motion that "all God's children" be allowed to film the hearing.

Miller's motion delayed the hearing for nearly 50 minutes until the required number of lawmakers were present to vote on the motion.

The Gasland documentary has gained notoriety for a scene with flaming tap water. Shale gas supporters have said it was filled with inaccuracies and distorts the safety record of U.S. shale gas production.

Shale gas output has skyrocketed in recent years thanks to advances in hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. While innovations have sharply boosted production of U.S. natural gas, critics say the rapidly expanding development threatens drinking water and public health.

Since the release of Gasland, Fox has become a high-profile opponent of fracking, joining efforts to prevent drilling in the Delaware River Basin and working to get water to families in Dimock, Pennsylvania, who say their water has been tainted by drilling.

When the House hearing resumed, Republicans, who strongly support the natural gas drilling, accused the EPA of basing its findings in Wyoming on politics and not science.

"In its single-minded pursuit of the hydraulic fracturing smoking gun, EPA appears to have lost focus on identifying the real causes and real solutions to drinking water quality problems in Pavillion, Wyoming," said Andy Harris, the top Republican on the subcommittee.

The EPA defended its work in Pavillion. EPA region 8 administrator Jim Martin stressed that its study was conducted under rigorous standards and the findings were limited to the unique geology in Pavillion and not meant to be applied to other places where drilling is occurring.

"EPA has acted carefully, thoughtfully, deliberately, and transparently in our ground water investigation and in sharing the data and findings contained in our draft report," Martin said.

(AP Photo/Rick Bowmer, File)

(AP) ? Strong holiday demand for toys including Barbie and Monster High dolls helped push Mattel Inc.'s fourth-quarter profit up a better-than-expected 14 percent.

The company also raised its dividend and its shares edged higher in premarket trading.

But there were a few lumps of coal in the report, as U.S. sales dipped and weakness continued at its Fisher-Price unit.

The holiday quarter is crucial for toy makers, who can make up to half of their annual sales during the period.

Mattel, which is the No. 1 U.S. toy maker, reported Tuesday that its net income rose to $370.6 million, or $1.07 per share, for the period ended Dec. 31. That's up from $325.2 million, or 89 cents per share, a year ago.

This beat the $1 per share that analysts polled by FactSet expected.

"Mattel delivered another strong year, our third consecutive year of solid performance, which I am especially pleased about given the soft global economic backdrop and the highly promotional environment, particularly in the U.S.," CEO Bryan G. Stockton said in a statement.

Mattel's quarterly revenue edged up 1 percent to $2.15 billion from $2.12 billion. But that missed Wall Street's estimate of $2.22 billion.

A 2 percent drop in U.S. sales was offset by stronger results overseas, where revenue rose 5 percent.

Barbie sales rose 6 percent in the quarter. Sales of for Mattel's Wheels segment ? which includes the Hot Wheels, Matchbox and Tyco R/Co brands ? increased 5 percent. American Girl sales rose 4 percent. But sales for Fisher-Price fell 10 percent. The Fisher-Price unit makes pre-school toys such as Power Wheels.

For the year, Mattel reported net income of $768.5 million, or $2.18 per share, up from $684.9 million, or $1.86 per share, a year earlier.

Annual revenue increased 7 percent to $6.27 billion from $5.86 billion.

Mattel, based in El Segundo, California, is also raising its annual dividend by 35 percent. r

The toy maker will pay a first-quarter cash dividend of 31 cents per share on March 9 to shareholders of record on Feb. 23. Its annualized dividend is expected to be $1.24 per share. The prior-year's dividend was 92 cents per share.

The company said that its $680 million acquisition of HIT Entertainment, the company behind Thomas the Tank Engine and Bob the Builder, is expected to close on Wednesday. Mattel announced the deal in October. It will be the company's biggest acquisition in a decade.

Mattel's chief rival, Hasbro Inc., reports its financial results on Monday.
