Many people suffer from tinnitus, some more than others. Some can live with the small amount of tinnitus they have while others suffer from such violent tinnitus that it is difficult to live with. Unfortunately, there is no cure for tinnitus, and once you have tinnitus, it has come to stay.
Tinnitus is sounds in the ear and head which come from an external source. The sound can be a ringing, buzzing or whistling which can be more or less intense. Everybody has experienced temporary tinnitus, but those who suffer from tinnitus have the sounds in their head and ears 24 hours a day. Most experience their tinnitus when they are not around other sounds, for example in the evening and at night when they want to sleep.
Some learn to live with their tinnitus, while others have trouble dealing with these phantom sounds. Some can experience emotional problems or even depression.
Causes of tinnitus
It is thought that most cases of tinnitus are caused by noise, for example music. Other causes can be some types of medicine, M?ni?re?s disease, stress and head injuries. Tinnitus is often accompanied by a large or minor hearing loss. If you also have a larger hearing loss, hearing aids are often recommended ? both because they improve hearing but also because they can dull the tinnitus to a degree.
If you have tinnitus, there are some coping strategies which can be used. Often, it is a question of avoiding noise and stress. Some benefit from avoiding cigarettes, coffee and alcohol, while others benefit from a tinnitus masker.
Many people have found Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) to help. Tinnitus Retraining Therapy is a method by which one learns to live with and disregard one?s tinnitus. All around the world, courses are offered in learning to live with tinnitus.
Protect your hearing
As previously mentioned, there is no cure for tinnitus, even though some try to sell herbal remedies and other forms of treatment.
The best thing is to try and avoid getting tinnitus. The best way to do this is to take care of your hearing and especially avoid loud noises, for example loud music. This can be done by wearing earplugs to concerts and turning down your iPod or MP3-player. If you work in a noisy environment, it is a good idea to use hearing protection, both at work and in your free time.
