Sweden's newborn princess to be named Estelle (omg!)

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? Sweden's newborn princess and future monarch has a name: Estelle Silvia Ewa Mary.

King Carl XVI Gustaf announced his granddaughter's name, and said the baby girl, who was born Thursday to Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, will receive the title Duchess of Ostergotland, a province in southeast Sweden.

As Victoria's first-born child, she is second in line to the throne.

Estelle, a name of French origin, is unusual in Sweden and took royal watchers by surprise, though it isn't unprecedented in the royal family, which has French roots. Estelle was the name of the American-born wife of the king's godfather, Count Folke Bernadotte, a U.N. mediator in the Israeli-Arab conflict who was assassinated in Jerusalem in 1948.

Silvia is the name of Victoria's mother and Ewa is Daniel's mother's name.

Mary is not common in the Swedish royal family, but it's the name of Denmark's Australian-born crown princess.

The king didn't explain the reasoning behind the names.

"We have now been given a little Princess Estelle in Sweden and we are all, particularly me and the family, very, very happy and joyful for that," he said.

Victoria and Daniel returned to their lakeside palace Thursday and have not appeared in public with the child.

The court's Mistress of the Robes, Alice Trolle-Wachtmeister, described the newborn princess as a "spitting image" of her mother Victoria.

Sweden's monarch is primarily a figurehead, representing the country as the head of state but with powers limited to ceremonial functions.

Facebook may be rough ride for investors

Brian Snyder / Reuters

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

By Roland Jones

Investors, social media watchers and Facebook users may be looking forward to the social network?s expected public stock offering later this year, but corporate governance experts aren?t quite so enthusiastic.

Earlier this month, Facebook filed for a $5 billion IPO -- a deal that would be one of the biggest public stock offerings ever and values the social media juggernaut at about $100 billion.

Those sorts of numbers, coupled with the company?s strong brand name, are likely to draw interest from individual investors eager to buy a piece of the company.?Governance experts caution, however,?that while buying a hot company like Facebook feels good now, potential investors should be wary of the stringent executive control structure outlined in the company?s IPO registration document.

?Right now you have a situation at Facebook where there?s a benevolent dictatorship, but my concern is they tend to become malevolent dictatorships, and that can hurt you when it comes to the pinch,? said Aswath Damodaran, a professor of finance at New York University's Stern School of Business.

Damodaran notes that, based on information in the company?s filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Facebook?s founder and Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg would retain complete control of the company for the foreseeable future and would even have the right to appoint his own successor before he dies.

Facebook has also set up defenses against takeovers and proxy fights, when shareholders unite to force changes at the directorial and management level.

Key to Facebook?s stringent control structure is its dual stock ownership structure, where a company issues two classes of shares with different voting and ownership rights. The system allows the company?s founders and management to maintain control, but still solicit investments from the public, Damodaran said.

?This system has been foreign to the U.S. and for a long time it wasn?t a common thing here, but you can blame Google for its return,? he said, noting that the search firm used the format when it launched its IPO in 2004 and has inspired a number of the new Internet technology firms now launching IPOs to follow suit.

?Whether this is fair or not fair, people still want to buy stocks like Facebook because this is a hot sector, and when that?s the case companies can basically write the rules,? Damodaran said. ?I don?t have any objections to Zuckerberg as a CEO; I think he has done a good job. But I don?t think it?s in shareholders? interests to sign him on for life. Investors should discount the possibility that there?s a crisis for the company down the road, and if one happens they will not have much of a say.?

A case in point is Yahoo, Damodaran added. Fifteen years ago the search company was the darling of Wall Street, well managed and well run. Ten years later it was a ?disaster waiting to happen? and rejected Microsoft?s multi-billion dollar takeover offer that some shareholders may have preferred it to accept.

?So let?s say for example that in 10 years? time there?s some disaster at Facebook and it receives a takeover offer from Apple,? he continued. ?Shareholders might want the company to take the offer, but if Zuckerberg says it can?t go through it doesn?t happen. Sometimes it?s best for a company in trouble to clean house and do away with management and the board and be acquired at the best price.?

If you?re planning on buying Facebook?s shares in the hopes that the company will eventually update its governance structure, you?re likely to be disappointed, notes Matthew Rhodes-Kropf, a professor at Harvard Business School who specializes in corporate governance issues.

?The evidence suggests that the corporate governance structure you have in place when you go public tends to stay in place,? he said.

But companies have an incentive to put in place a governance structure that leans more toward a democracy than a dictatorship, he added, pointing to research that shows greater democracy toward shareholders increases a company?s return on assets -- a measure of its profitability -- and its stock performance.

?So managers should be responsive to their shareholders, but in the end we all want roughly the same thing -- we want the company running well and we want it to make a profit, so we should probably leave them alone,? he said.

I wouldn?t want a company manager to listen to every whim of their shareholders, like politicians who pander to every whim of the electorate, he said.

?It?s not a brilliant way to run the country and not good way to run a firm.?

How to Stop Kids Fighting: Parenting Ideas for Family Arguing ...

parenting ideas for family arguingwww.kidtelligent.com

What parenting ideas can bring peace to the home?

If you ask anyone who has more than one child to name the most persistent and annoying issue that parents face, the answer is consistently, ?How to stop kids fighting.?? The problem begins in the nursery when dethroned Prince Toddler discovers that he can make Baby Princess cry by taking away her binky.? Some experts suggest that sibling rivalry is inevitable and that it teaches people how NOT to get along with their spouses. Of course, not all kids are the same, and sibling rivalry doesn?t play out the same way in every household.? Nevertheless, there are some strategies that parents can use to reduce the conflicts.

Set consequences for kids fighting

The first is to develop meaningful consequences delivered in a calm, empathetic voice when the yelling and crying begins.? Examples:? ?I?m sorry that you two can?t decide whose turn it is to play with that toy.? I guess I will have to put the toy somewhere else until you decide how to share it fairly.?? The toy may go into the same stash of toys that you confiscated after they ?forgot? to clean up last week.? They make great presents for next Christmas!

Separate them when conflicts and sibling rivalry starts

?I?ve been thinking that you two seem to fight more when you are tired.? I think you both will feel a lot better after you take a little rest in your rooms.?? This may bring out more whining and begging until you suggest that rest time begins when they are quiet in their rooms.? It doesn?t take long for them to learn that they are in control of how long they stay in their room and if they need another rest in the near future.

Sending them to their room works well, except when a conflict takes place in the car.? The objective of the parent is to tell the children what she is going to do rather than what they have to do.? For example, ?I will be stopping the car until I hear only peaceful noises in the back seat.?? This works especially well if you are taking them somewhere important to them.? Otherwise, ?Your arguing is draining my energy.? When we get home I have some jobs that you may have to do for me before you have dinner.?

Give them ideas to stop family arguing

Children can be taught to resolve their own conflicts.? When they are both in a calm state, establish some ground rules for family behavior:? No putdowns, no name calling and no physical contact.? Talk to them about ideas for taking turns by using a timer or flipping a coin.? Agree to reward them if they can compromise on an issue rather than arguing or whining to Mom.???? Practice role playing conflict resolution skills.? They can use feeling words or simply say,?? ?I don?t like it when you _____? and I wish that ____.? Teach them to brainstorm for a solution such as, ?I?ll agree to _____ if you?ll agree to ____.?

Some children may have similar personalities and get along great, except when Mom is around.? In that case, try locking yourself in the bathroom just after you tell them to do their arguing in the basement.? As long as you know that they are physically safe, it may go a long way to preserving your sanity.

Try these ideas, and one day you may wake up and hear strange noises in the house ? peaceful noises.? They may not always agree, but kids can learn to replace sibling rivalry with the fine art of civility.? Will GOP perp walk lead to W.H.? (Politico)

I am sick to death of the media?s scare tactics.

Which is why I nearly jumped out of my skin when CNN?s John King said during Wednesday night?s Republican debate, ?One of these men could be president 11 months from now.?

It was enough to give one chills.

This was the 20th time the Republican hopefuls had debated, and they seemed to be looking for whole new ways to communicate.

How else could you explain the statement of front-runner Rick Santorum, who said at one point: ?I voted for that. It was against the principles I believed in.?

See what I mean? Santorum was operating on a whole different level: Anybody can vote for the things he believes in. Anybody can vote for things that are principled.

But it takes a man of real courage to vote for things that he neither believes in nor believes are principled.

At another point, Santorum said, ?I have a personal moral objection (to contraception), but I?ve voted for bills that included it, too.?

It was that kind of night. Everything had been said but not everybody had said it, and the 90-minute debate proved Einstein?s theory that time can actually slow down.

I would accuse the candidates of just going through the motions, but there was hardly any motion.

Scratch that. CNN began with my favorite part of these spectacles: The candidate perp walk. One by one, Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul paced wearily onto the stage. If their suits had not been uniformly funereal in color, they would have resembled prisoners on a chain gang.

During the debate, they seemed so dispirited ? even when regurgitating their pre-tested attack lines ? that I expected to see Madame Defarge sitting in the front row of the audience knitting their names into a sweater.

One word sums it up: desultory. Which Google tells us means ?lacking a plan, purpose, or enthusiasm.?

I would have been happy with just one of the three.

Hubble reveals a new class of extrasolar planet

Tuesday, February 21, 2012

An international team of astronomers led by Zachory Berta of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) made the observations of the planet GJ 1214b.

"GJ 1214b is like no planet we know of," Berta said. "A huge fraction of its mass is made up of water."

The ground-based MEarth Project, led by CfA's David Charbonneau, discovered GJ 1214b in 2009. This super-Earth is about 2.7 times Earth's diameter and weighs almost seven times as much. It orbits a red-dwarf star every 38 hours at a distance of 2 million kilometres, giving it an estimated temperature of 230 degrees Celsius.

In 2010, CfA scientist Jacob Bean and colleagues reported that they had measured the atmosphere of GJ 1214b, finding it likely that it was composed mainly of water. However, their observations could also be explained by the presence of a planet-enshrouding haze in GJ 1214b's atmosphere.

Berta and his co-authors, who include Derek Homeier of ENS Lyon, France, used Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) to study GJ 1214b when it crossed in front of its host star. During such a transit, the star's light is filtered through the planet's atmosphere, giving clues to the mix of gases.

"We're using Hubble to measure the infrared colour of sunset on this world," Berta explained.

Hazes are more transparent to infrared light than to visible light, so the Hubble observations help to tell the difference between a steamy and a hazy atmosphere.

They found the spectrum of GJ 1214b to be featureless over a wide range of wavelengths, or colours. The atmospheric model most consistent with the Hubble data is a dense atmosphere of water vapour.

"The Hubble measurements really tip the balance in favour of a steamy atmosphere," Berta said.

Since the planet's mass and size are known, astronomers can calculate the density, of only about 2 grams per cubic centimetre. Water has a density of 1 gram per cubic centimetre, while Earth's average density is 5.5 grams per cubic centimetre. This suggests that GJ 1214b has much more water than Earth does, and much less rock.

As a result, the internal structure of GJ 1214b would be extraordinarily different from that of our world.

"The high temperatures and high pressures would form exotic materials like 'hot ice' or 'superfluid water', substances that are completely alien to our everyday experience," Berta said.

Theorists expect that GJ 1214b formed further out from its star, where water ice was plentiful, and migrated inward early in the system's history. In the process, it would have passed through the star's habitable zone, where surface temperatures would be similar to Earth's. How long it lingered there is unknown.

GJ 1214b is located in the constellation of Ophiuchus (The Serpent Bearer), and just 40 light-years from Earth. Therefore, it's a prime candidate for study by the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope, planned for launch later this decade.

A paper reporting these results has been accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal and is available online.

Inter vs. intra ? Business Management Daily: Free Reports on ...

Betty, an admin reader, recently wrote, ?My goodness, will you please do a piece that tells people the difference between ?intra? and ?inter?? While you?re at it, ?effect? vs. ?affect? wouldn?t hurt, either.?

When it comes to effect vs. affect, here?s the rule:

If you affect something, you?ll see the effect. By and large, if you stick with this rule, you?ll be correct.

To remember the difference between intra and inter, keep in mind interstate highways and company intranets:

Interstate highways take you from one state to another. A company intranet is for employees within the company.

So you can remember that inter means between, and intra means within.

Bottom line: Learning the difference between closely related words is an essential skill for an administrative pro. If you can?t get grammar right, people may wonder about your ability to do the job.

Betty resoundingly agrees: ?It can make you and your boss look bad if your written or spoken grammar is incorrect.?

Limits on Electronics Use in Cars Is Safe Thinking (ContributorNetwork)

[unable to retrieve full-text content]ContributorNetwork - COMMENTARY | Last year, I was almost involved in a minor auto accident due to what could be easily referred to as careless driving. Driving down what was a relatively empty street, I was almost hit by another driver in another vehicle. Once both the vehicles came to a stop, I looked into the other vehicle and saw something that absolutely made my blood boil. The person in the other car was talking on their cell phone and came within two feet of hitting my car. My question then was why aren't there stricter regulations for using electronic devices in cell phones?

Kindle Fire jumps to No. 2 in tablet wars

Amazon

By Athima Chansanchai

Kindle Fire has barely reached the toddler stage of its young life, but it's already shot up in tablet sales,??second only to Apple's iPad ? at least for the last quarter of 2011.?

Research by?IHS?iSuppli Display Materials & Systems Service?reveals an impressive debut quarter for Amazon's first tablet, which arrived in November for the gift-ready price of $200. While Amazon doesn't reveal the breakdown of specific Kindle models when it releases its sales figures, it did report a record-breaking 4 million sold in December. IHS iSuppli's analysis shows that most, if not almost all, of those sales were probably Kindle Fires?? about 3.9 million in that final quarter of 2011.

While it blew past Samsung, Barnes & Noble and Asus' tablets in that quarter, Amazon's device has a long way to go before it can be considered any kind of threat to the iPad and iPad 2, which saw sales of 40.5 million in 2011. That's up 168 percent from 2010, when 15.1 million were sold. But the proliferation of tablets has started to dig into Apple's dominance, as its share of the market fell to 62 percent in 2011, from 87 percent in 2010.

But IHS iSuppli predicts that Apple will see a surge with the introduction of the next iPad:

IHS iSuppli anticipates strong sales for the iPad 3, with demand expected to outstrip supply for several months. The new device is reported to feature a QXGA retina display with a pixel format of 2,048 by 1,536, as well as SIRI, the popular voice interface of the iPhone 4S. As with previous iPad releases, Apple is anticipated to stage a staggered rollout, introducing the new product in different countries around the globe as supply improves.

Samsung hung onto No. 2 for the year, with 6.1 million tabs sold. The Kindle Fire came in third at 6 percent for the year, selling more units in that last quarter than Nook and Asus tablets did the entire year.

In 2011, 65.2 million tablets made it to consumers, which was above the estimate of 64.7 million IHS predicted.?

In early December, just weeks after the Kindle Fire's release, IHS was already predicting it to be No. 2 that quarter. As researcher Rhoda Alexander?? who also wrote the most recent IHS report?? explained:

?At a rock bottom price of $199 ? which is less than the $201.70 it now costs to make the device ? the Kindle Fire has created chaos in the?Androidtablet?market,? Alexander said. ?Most other Android tablet makers must earn a profit based on hardware sales alone. In contrast, Amazon plans to use the Kindle Fire to drive sales of physical goods that comprise the majority of the company?s business. As long as this strategy is successful, the company can afford to take a loss on the hardware?while its Android competitors cannot.?

Women's Motorcycle Helmets | Automotive Tips

It?s been proven that among the different modes of transportation, motorcycle ride is the more dangerous way to travel. When a motorcycle rider meets an accident, he may experience hospitalization, long-term disability, or even death. In 2008, statistics reveal that there were more deaths that resulted from motorcycle accidents over car accidents.

Thus, the need for all kinds of motorcycle protective apparel made available to the riders. There are helmets, shades/goggles, jackets, pants, vests, and full riding suits, rainwear, riding underwear, gloves and socks. Among these, the motorcycle helmet is considered the most important personal protective riding gear.

There are motorcycle helmets that are made for unisex. However, as women motorcycle riders have significantly increased over time, more attention is now given to women?s motorcycle helmets. A woman?s motorcycle helmet is a lot like a man?s motorcycle helmet. Both helmets are made with safety of the rider in mind. The main difference is just in the sizing and in the graphics, colors and design. In terms of size, women?s motorcycle helmets are slightly smaller than men?s motorcycle helmets.

Women?s motorcycle helmets come in more feminine and attractive colors. It could range from bright pink to loud purple. Neutral colors like black, greys, blues and whites are also available. Femininity and sexual appeal are considered in the design of motorcycle helmets for women.

When buying a motorcycle helmet, you must give weight to protection and safety features on top of expression of personal style. The following factors must also be considered in choosing a helmet,

? the outer shell and inner liner

? proper sizing and fit

? approval/sticker from the concerned government agency

Helmet Construction

Helmets have two protective components: the outer shell and inner liner. The hard outer shell provides skull protection from puncture of pointed objects. Also, this is designed to spread the kinetic force from the impact across itself prior to conduction into the helmet. The shock-absorbing inner liner acts as the second layer of defense when the force of impact can no longer be contained by the outer shell.

Helmet Sizing and Fit

When choosing a motorcycle helmet, refer to the manufacturer?s fitting chart as a guide. Women?s motorcycle helmet sizes come in extra small, small, medium, large, extra large (XL) and 2XL. It is still best to try on the motorcycle helmet when buying. Outwardly pull to widen the chin strap and place the helmet over the head. It should have comfortable, snug fit and its tightness should not allow you to lodge a thumb between the helmet and your forehead.

Adjust and fasten the chin strap but make sure that this will not restrict your neck movements. Shake your head to ensure that the helmet doesn?t move unnecessarily or fall off. In addition, press down on the helmet to check on the overall comfort and snug fit onto your head.Your field of vision, front and both sides, must not be obstructed. For riders who don corrective eyewear, make certain that the helmet can comfortably accommodate your pair of eyeglasses.

If your have long hair, and wish to ?wear? it inside the helmet while riding, do so while trying on the helmet to properly accommodate the bulk.

Approval Sticker

The motorcycle helmet must be approved or have a sticker issued by the Department of Transportation (DOT) of the United States of America (U.S.A.) or the Snell Memorial Foundation. A DOT or Snell sticker signifies that the helmet meets U.S. or international safety standards

Helmet Types

Generally, there are five principal types of motorcycle helmets;

? full face helmets

? modular helmets

? half helmets

? open face helmets

? motor-cross helmets

The Lady Bikers? Den enumerates the different motorcycle helmets available for women. These types range from shorty skid lid biker helmets, German motorcycle helmets, carbon fiber motorcycle helmets, full-face sports bike or street bike helmets, open-face ? shell retro biker helmets and flip-up modular helmets. There is a particular style to suit your ride.

Aside from protection, a motorcycle helmet can be a fashion statement.? If you prefer to stick out and set yourself apart while riding your motorcycle, then you can choose a custom painted, designed or personalized helmet. You may visit your nearest local shop or the internet websites to check out the vast selection of custom designed motorcycle helmets.

As motorcycle helmets are designed to break or crack in a crash in order to absorb the impact, they become easily damaged.? Replace the helmet when it has been damaged in an accident or after any impact. Ideally, it is recommended to replace the motorcycle helmet every three years or so even if it has not suffered any impact or appears to be in top condition.

ScienceDaily (Feb. 15, 2012) ? By adding an incredibly thin coating of alumina to a metal surface, researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have doubled the rate that heat travels from a solid surface -- such as a pot on a stove -- into the liquid in the pot. The results are published in the American Institute of Physics' journal Applied Physics Letters.

Pool boiling is the most common and familiar method of heating a container's contents, and is a remarkably efficient heat transfer method. The transfer of heat in this case is referred to as the "heat flux." There exists, however, a critical point at which a solid surface gets too hot and pool-boiling efficiency is lost.

"Delaying the critical flux could play an important role in advancing thermal management of electronics as well as improving the efficiency of a number of energy systems," says Bo Feng, Ph.D., the Georgia Tech researcher leading this project. In boiling, bubbles carry away large amounts of heat from solid surfaces, but the bubbles also act as an insulator, preventing the liquid from rewetting the surface and thereby interrupting heat transfer. The alumina coating -- only a few hundreds of atoms thick (1/1,000 the thickness of a human hair) -- has a high affinity to water and, as a result, facilitates the rapid rewetting of the solid surface.

"This is the primary reason for the enhancement of heat transfer," says Feng. An atomic layer deposition technique was used to control the thickness. By achieving such a thin coating, the additional layer of alumina did not appreciably increase thermal resistance, but it did increase the overall heat transfer.

"The potential contribution of this investigation lies in tailoring the wettability of surfaces at the nanometer scale, thereby greatly increasing the heat transfer during pool boiling," adds G.P. "Bud" Peterson, Ph.D., director of Georgia Tech's Two-Phase Heat Transfer Lab. "This is especially promising for applications where the implementation of nanotube or nanowire arrays are possible." Nanotube and nanowire arrays are another effective way to enhance pool boiling heat transfer. Combining these two techniques -- nanotube and/or nanowire arrays and nano-coating by atomic layer deposition -- may increase pool-boiling efficiency even further.

Greece faces tough job to seal rescue (Reuters)

ATHENS (Reuters) ? Greece has admitted it still faces a tough job in persuading the European Union and IMF to save it from bankruptcy even after parliament approved savage extra budget cuts, provoking a night of looting and burning in central Athens.

A suspicious EU has told leaders of the two parties left in the government of technocrat Prime Minister Lucas Papademos to give written commitments by Wednesday that they will implement the pay, pension and job cuts after elections expected in April.

As parliament debated the austerity package on Sunday night, riot police fought running battles with protesters outside. By daybreak on Monday 93 buildings had been wrecked or seriously damaged in the city centre, some of them historic monuments.

The written undertakings are not the only demand euro zone finance ministers have made before they decide whether to approve a 130 billion euro bailout, part of which Athens must get if it is not to default chaotically when 14.5 billion euros in debt repayments fall due on March 20.

Weary of broken Greek promises, the Eurogroup ministers have also told Athens to say how it will fill a 325 million euro gap in its plan for an extra 3.3 billion euros in savings this year before they meet in Brussels on Wednesday.

Government spokesman Pantelis Kapsis accepted that Athens had work to do. "The Eurogroup on Wednesday will obviously be a tough one but the government believes the political leaders' positions show we are determined to continue," he said.

But comments by Antonis Samaras, who leads the conservative New Democracy party, are unlikely to reassure Europe. He ordered lawmakers from his party, the smaller of the two in the coalition, to vote for the deal but simultaneously made clear he wanted it changed once Greece had avoided bankruptcy.

"I am calling you to vote for the new loan agreement because I want to avoid falling into the abyss, to restore stability, so that we can have the possibility tomorrow to negotiate and change the policy that is being imposed upon us today," he told parliament.

FRONTRUNNER SAMARAS

With New Democracy ahead in the polls, Samaras is frontrunner to become prime minister when Papademos steps aside after securing the bailout and a bond swap deal to ease Greece's huge debt burden. However, Samaras has proved reluctant in the past to give written undertakings to the EU.

Kapsis said the Finance Ministry was working on the problem of a 325 million euro gap, adding that much remained to be tied up even after the Eurogroup meeting and the bailout memorandum as the March 20 debt repayment date nears.

Greece had to seal the "Private Sector Involvement" (PSI) deal to reduce its debt burden. "The next three weeks will be hellish. The list of actions regarding the PSI and the memorandum is extremely pressing," Kapsis said.

Terms of the PSI, under which private creditors will take a major cut in the value of their Greek government debt holdings, are set to be announced after the Eurogroup meeting, sources familiar with the talks said on Monday.

Greece's creditors will take a net loss of 70 percent, two of the sources told Reuters.

Underlining the doubts of Greece's euro zone partners, Luxembourg Finance Minister Luc Frieden said on Monday that a failure by Greece to meet all the conditions laid down for it would lead to its exit from the euro zone.

Greece may decide it is better to leave the euro zone than to go through with such severe budget cuts, he told the Atlantic Council in Washington.

A sharply devalued currency would give it more flexibility.

"It might be something which would allow Greece also to get a new start ... to create an economy that can create jobs. This however is not a scenario that I would prefer," he said.

The euro zone was better prepared now than a year ago to cope with a Greek default and exit from the euro zone, Frieden said, a view echoed by German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble speaking to the ZDF public broadcaster.

But U.S. rating agency Moody's, citing growing risks from Europe's debt crisis and worries about its ability to make needed reforms, downgraded the ratings of six European countries late on Monday and put Britain, France and Austria on negative outlook.

Uncertainty about the resources that will be devoted to tackling the crisis, and Europe's "increasingly weak macroeconomic prospects" were other factors behind its action, it said.

ANGER AND OUTRAGE

Many Athens residents fear that Sunday night's violence may lead to something like the riots in 2008, which spread across the country and lasted for weeks after police shot dead a 15-year-old schoolboy - or something yet worse.

"It is very likely that such protests will be repeated because people are very angry, they are outraged," said Vassilis Korkidis, head of the Greek Commerce Confederation.

"Once again the state didn't take any precautionary measures, once again Athens was burnt down," he told Reuters. "The damage is estimated at tens of million euros."

Stunned residents gathered at many of the burnt-out shells of shops, arcades, banks and cafes. Fire crews tended to still smoking buildings and workers cleared huge amounts of rubble from roads and pavements after the night of mayhem.

"People sent a message yesterday: Enough is enough! They can't take it any more," said Ilias Iliopoulos, general secretary of public sector union ADEDY.

"The social explosion will come one way or another, there is nothing they can do about it any more," he told Reuters.

The Fringe Festival embodies the essence of performing arts ...

You won?t be surprised to hear that the Fringe Festival has nothing to do with showcasing hairstyles. It is in fact the largest arts festival in world which runs alongside the official Edinburgh International Festival every August.

The annual festival sees hundreds of seasoned performers and aspiring artists take to the streets and set up their stalls at numerous venue to show the people of Edinburgh what they can do?be it comedy, singing, body-popping, break-dancing or fire-eating?

You may be asking yourself what distinguishes the Fringe Festival (sometimes referred to as the Festival Fringe or simply ?The Fringe?) from the Edinburgh International Festival?

Well it really all comes down to invitations and gate-crashing, to put it simply. When the Edinburgh Festival was set up in 1947, only those artists who had received official invitations to perform at the Festival were ?allowed? to attend. This is still the case today.

As a kind of peaceful protest, seven theatre companies simply turned up in Edinburgh to perform for the crowds, determined to share their artistic abilities and message with the people of Edinburgh.

It is this approach which makes the Fringe Festival so unique and popular. The passion displayed by both the performing artists and the huge crowds embodies the essence of performing arts as a means of expression.

As one might expect, there was a subtle rivalry between the Edinburgh Festival and the Fringe Festival in the first few decades as there was a feeling among the Edinburgh Festival organisers that this Fringe Festival ?side show? undermined the official festival despite attracting huge numbers of people to the city and positive publicity.

In 1959, the Festival Fringe Society was founded with the aim of providing an element of organisation to the expanding festival. Official guides to the Fringe were produced for the first time to help visitors make the most of their time at the festival.

By the early 80s, the Fringe Festival had grown in popularity to such an extent that around 500 theatre companies were attending every year, making it officially the largest arts festival in the world; a quite incredible achievement!

The popularity of the Fringe Festival has seen the number of shows go over the 2000 mark in recent years with the most popular genres being comedy, theatre, music and dance.

The Fringe?s defining concept of art without restrictions is never more present than in the delightful street performances around town. If you are not keen to purchase tickets for a show at one of the Fringe Festivals 260+ venues, you can simply take in an often extravagant street performance on the Royal Mile and around the Old Town.

Many of the street performers use their time with the crowds to show off their skills in the hope that many of the onlookers will come to their official shows at the venues around town. Many other performers are simply there because performance art runs in their blood and they love to entertain people!

The fact that most shows and the artists who perform in them barely break even is testament to the participants? commitment to performing arts and entertainment. From their perspective, the Fringe Festival is often seen as a testing ground, a way to make contacts or a way of gaining experience for the future.

The Fringe Festival is a wonderful opportunity to experience how vibrant, exciting and downright quirky Edinburgh can be!

"Liberals like abortion more than cancer research". Of course they do. Following thier high priestess Margaret Sanger and her advocation for the elimination and the thinning of blacks from American soil has always been the objective of the party of the KKK. The democrat party enslaves them into dependency so they can manage thier destruction.

Imagine, if you could remember and write down everything corrupt, incompetent, and evil that we've learned about 0bama, his administration, and the left-wing in general? What would the list look like??

This is what it would look like: http://www.american-trojan-horse.blogspot.com/

Maybe planned parenthood should get off their duff and plan their own walk which would raise money to kill babies. They should get their own ribbon color so everyone could recognize that goal.

Just a thought.

Lighting Up the Night | ASU News | The State Press | Arizona State ...

Dr. Paul Scowen lectures students at the bi-monthly lectures put on by the ASU Astronomy Club. Photo by Dominic Valente.

A backdrop of glowing colors, bright points of light and fantastical shapes swirls around like so much modern art as associate research professor Paul Scowen launches ASU Astronomy Club?s new lecture series.

The free, bi-monthly lectures were inspired by the club?s desire to welcome the public into the field of astronomy and to ?foster interest in astronomy from the ?gee whiz? side of things,? Scowen says.

?Gee whiz? and various ?oohs and ahhs? are usually exclamations saved for Fourth of July firework displays, but the unraveling mysteries of the cosmos has Scowen?s audience equally starry-eyed. College kids, high school students, professors and even families fill the 200-person lecture hall while Scowen delivers a far from ordinary presentation.

For the past decade or so, students in the School of Earth and Space Exploration have hosted monthly open houses. These open houses feature hands-on booths, stargazing and planetarium shows. This semester the club wants a way to generate more public interest and education.

?It?s a concept that has been implemented at other universities with great success,? says Kimberly Ward-Duong, club member and astrophysics graduate student.

While still including the astronomy open house, the lectures will also touch on all the ?big burning questions in astronomy,? she says. Future topics include super-massive black holes, extraterrestrials, galaxies, supernovas and planetary systems.

?Astronomy is a subject that draws people to pursue it with passion because it captures the imagination,? Scowen says, jumping from behind his desk to motion toward a Hubble Space Telescope image of the Eagle Nebula, its three smoky columns defying comprehension.

?The lectures are aimed at creating a broad sense of appreciation without requiring college-level physics or math,? he says.

Unlike most talks concerning astronomy and related sciences, Scowen?s most recent lecture on star and planet formation isn?t filled with jargon and technicalities. Instead, nebulae become the ?interstellar equivalent of a neon ?Eat at Joe?s Diner? sign,? and gravity is explained through a shuffling pantomime of Scowen sticking to objects nearby.

Far from diminishing the magnitude of his own and others? work, Scowen has the audience chuckling, asking questions and taking a genuine interest in the formation of our solar system. Which, of course, is the whole point.

?Astronomy is a really cool field,? says Mark Richardson, club member and astrophysics graduate student. ?(This) is an exciting opportunity for people who are curious about astronomy to hear from those in the forefront of the field and to have a discussion.?

Scowen?s interest in astronomy began at the age of 13, and it?s clear from his hand motions and excited pacing that he is eager to share this love with the public. And he?s not alone.

Other ASU faculty, graduate students and undergraduates who share a passion for astronomy will be among the lecturers illuminating the night sky for those with an interest.

?We?re really excited about the turnout, and hopefully we will continue with this much success,? Ward-Duong says.

Nicole Perrone, one of the many curious minds in attendance, is an anthropology senior who watches Scowen bound from one side of the hall to another in an animated explanation of why studying massive stars is like looking back into our own past.

?I thought it would be really interesting to learn about the origin of the solar system since I?m an anthropology major,? Perrone says. ?It was understandable and he (Scowen) put it in layman?s terms.?

Pausing at the end of the talk, Scowen quotes one of his own undergraduate professors:??Leave all of your terrestrial frames of reference at the door, because they won?t be of any use here.?

Those in attendance wait two seconds in pregnant silence before breaking into applause, wondering at the vastness of the universe.

U.S. drone strike kills senior militant in Pakistan: officials (Reuters)

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) ? The second U.S. drone attack in two days in Pakistan's North Waziristan region killed four people on Thursday, including a senior militant commander with links to al Qaeda, Pakistani intelligence officials and Taliban sources said.

Badar Mansoor, leader of a faction of the Pakistani Taliban with close ties to al Qaeda, was one of the four killed in the strike in Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan, near the Afghan border, intelligence officials and Pakistani Taliban sources said.

"He was living in a small rented house with his wife and children in Miranshah. He, his wife and two other members of his family died on the spot," a Pakistani Taliban commander told Reuters. He declined to be identified.

Pakistani intelligence officials said the death toll could rise because buildings next to the one targeted were also damaged and people could have been there.

On Wednesday, a U.S. drone aircraft fired missiles at a compound in a village near Miranshah killing 10 suspected militants, Pakistani officials and villagers said.

The Central Intelligence Agency drone program, a key element of the U.S. counter-terrorism strategy in the region, was apparently halted after a November NATO cross-border air attack killed 24 Pakistani soldiers, sparking fury in Pakistan.

The attacks with the unmanned aircraft in Pakistan's unruly northwestern ethnic Pashtun areas along the Afghan border were resumed on January 10.

Several militant groups, including the Afghan Taliban and al Qaeda, operate in Pakistan's semi-autonomous border regions, taking advantage of a porous border with Afghanistan to conduct cross-border attacks, or plot violence elsewhere.

North Waziristan is also an important base for the al Qaeda-linked Haqqani network, an Afghan militant faction allied with the Taliban, which the United States says is one of its deadliest adversaries in Afghanistan.

While the Haqqanis say they no longer need havens in North Waziristan and stay in Afghanistan, they are known to still maintain a presence in the Pakistani border region.

The use of the remotely piloted aircraft over Pakistan is opposed by most Pakistani politicians and the public, who consider drone strikes violations of sovereignty with unacceptable civilian casualties.

But despite public opposition, Pakistan has quietly supported the program, which President Barack Obama ramped up after taking office in 2009.

Lawyer for Cuban agents vows last-ditch appeal (AP)

HAVANA ? A lawyer for five Cuban agents sentenced to long jail terms for spying in the United States said Wednesday he is preparing a last-ditch appeal, arguing that one of the men received bad counsel and that the jury for all five was prejudiced because the U.S. paid several journalists who covered the trial.

Attorney Thomas Goldstein said he would submit the appeal Feb. 15 before U.S. District Judge Joan Lenard, who can either rule on the matter, ask to hear arguments or order a full evidentiary hearing.

Four of the men have been jailed since 1998. The fifth, Rene Gonzalez, was released last year after 13 years in jail, but has been ordered to remain in the United States while he serves out his probation.

Gonzalez's lawyer, Phil Horowitz, said he would also appeal that probation decision shortly. He said the 55-year-old dual Cuban-American citizen is working as a caretaker at a private home, but would not reveal the location out of concern for his client's security.

The lawyers were interviewed by The Associated Press in a restricted area of Havana limited to government activities and hosting visiting foreign dignitaries.

While the agents' case is largely forgotten in the United States, it remains a cause celebre in Cuba, where the government hails the "Cuban Five" as heroes who were only trying to detect and prevent violent attacks against their country by exile groups. Cuban state-run media publish near daily accounts of solidarity from around the world, and images of the men stare down from billboards along rutted country roads.

Goldstein said he will argue that inadequate counsel from his lawyer resulted in a murder conviction and life sentence for one of the agents, Gerardo Hernandez, and he said all of their cases were prejudiced by a U.S. government program that was paying thousands of dollars to key journalists while the high-profile trial was going on, a fact that only came out later.

The journalists were paid for appearances on U.S.-funded Spanish-language radio and TV broadcasts primarily aimed at Cuba but available in Florida, while also publishing critical reports in local media.

Advocates for the five also say the trial court was wrong to reject their request for a change of venue from South Florida, which is home to a large Cuban exile community.

"I don't think anyone can deny that it is a serious issue when you try supposed Cuban agents in a Miami court ... and that it obviously is going to be a very political, very fraught trial," Goldstein said. "On top of that, to learn that the media is being paid by the U.S. government, we think raises a serious issue."

Goldstein, a Washington-based Supreme Court litigator, said he would take the case all the way to America's highest court if necessary, and that if the appeal fails, it will mean "the end of the road" for the legal process in the case. After that, he said, the only hope would be a political solution.

That is the same situation facing Maryland native Alan Gross, who was arrested in 2009 and sentenced to 15 years in jail after being caught bringing satellite phones and other equipment into Cuba illegally while on a USAID-funded democracy program. His appeal to Cuba's top court was denied last year, so Gross's only chance at release rests on a humanitarian pardon by Cuban President Raul Castro or some form of prisoner exchange.

Cuba has stopped short of linking the cases, but senior officials have said no one should expect the island to free the 62-year-old American in a "unilateral gesture."

Goldstein rejected any attempt to compare the cases legally, but that the symmetry of the two cases presented a political opportunity. He stressed, however, that he was a private lawyer and not privy to the thinking of the Cuban government on Gross.

"Alan Gross is entitled absolutely to individual justice," he said. "I would never encourage anyone to link what happens to him to what happens to my clients. You can't hold someone literally hostage," he said. "But it strikes me that to the extent that there are political solutions to both sets of cases, then there could end up being linkage ... on the political front."

Goldstein said the politically charged atmosphere in the lead-up to the U.S. election in November complicated any efforts to find common ground, particularly given the importance of Florida in presidential politics and strong feelings about the agents' case among many Cuban-Americans.

But he said he hoped President Barack Obama would ultimately see that freeing the men was good politics, and something that would likely lead to reciprocal gestures from Havana.

"If the president of the United States were to release the Five and nothing else happens, then it kind of falls like a dud," he said. "If, on the other hand, Cuba releases Alan Gross, the president releases the Five, the Cuban government, whatever ... it would allow the Cuban government to do a number of things."

Do I Be eligible for a any Debt Management Plan? | Growing Sound

Managing debt plans are probably the most widely used methods to take care of credit card debt issues. We all think about what standards you have to fulfill in order to qualify for the debt management plan.

For those who have credit card debt that you simply cannot pay off, one of many options you can look at is a debt management plan (DMP).

A DMP lets you lessen the quantity you spend towards your own unprotected financial obligations monthly so that your payments match within a spending budget that you could manage.

Thus giving a considerable advantage. However the debt management plan just isn?t for all. There are some crucial standards that you need to think about.

Don?t assume all financial obligations can be integrated

It is possible to just integrated unprotected financial obligations in a debt management plan.

Unprotected financial obligations consist of loans and also overdrafts, credit and also store cards, catalog financial obligations, doorstep and also payday advances. For those who have these kinds of financial obligations they may be integrated.

You can not consist of attached financial obligations for example mortgage loan or even attached bank loan financial obligations or a automobile H . p .. If you don?t continue to make these types of payments, a person threat your home or even vehicle being reclaimed.

Furthermore although they tend to be unprotected, you can not consist of taxes financial obligations in a debt management plan.

Should you must pay back money in order to HMRC in the form of income tax or even Value-added tax particularly like a only investor, the debt management plan won?t be for you personally and you should think about a person non-reflex set up which may consist of HMRC financial debt (Individual voluntary arrangement).

A sensible transaction is needed

There aren?t any guidelines regulating the amount you must pay into a debt management plan monthly.

The amount you pay is dependant on your own disposable earnings. Here?s your earnings less the quantity you have to devote to sensible cost of living monthly.

However, as you is still responsible for paying your whole financial debt back if you use the debt management plan. Unless you can pay a fair quantity monthly, trying to repay your debt might take an extremely long time.

For that reason it is simply practical to employ a debt management plan when you can pay off your debt within a 5 year period.

Or even, you should consider other managing debt options or even view the debt management plan like a short-term calculate to give you the breathing area until your own financial predicament enhances.

There aren?t any other genuine certification standards for any debt management plan. However there is something that you must look into whenever determining if a debt management plan is suitable for you personally.

Legal defense & interest charges

Must be debt management plan is in the end the result of a personal agreement between both you and your creditors it gives you simply no lawful defense against them. Which means that they are nonetheless capable of taking court action in opposition to one to gather their financial debt should they desire.
