Astronaut Neil Armstrong Dies

Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, is dead at the age of 82. He was the first of just 12 Americans to step on the moon from 1969 to 1972. Guest host Laura Sullivan speaks with science journalist Andrew Chaikin, who knew Armstrong and wrote about his contributions to the space program.

LAURA SULLIVAN, HOST:

It's WEEKENDS on ALL THINGS CONSIDERED from NPR News. I'm Laura Sullivan, in for Guy Raz.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

NEIL ARMSTRONG: That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.

SULLIVAN: Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon. He died today at the age of 82 after complications from a heart procedure. He was the first of just 12 Americans to step on the moon from 1969 to 1972.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

ARMSTRONG: It has a stark beauty all its own. It's like much of the high desert of the United States. It's different, but it's very pretty out here.

SULLIVAN: Neil Armstrong was known as a private man and gave very few interviews. But science journalist Andrew Chaikin convinced Armstrong in 1988 to speak to him for his book "A Man on the Moon: Voyages of the Apollo Astronauts." Neil Armstrong and Andrew Chaikin grew to be friends.

And Andrew Chaikin joins us now from his home in Vermont. Andrew, that line, one small step, you know, that line said a lot about Neil Armstrong, didn't it?

ANDREW CHAIKIN: Well, what really, to me, said a lot about Neil was the conversation we had about that quote. And I promised him I was not going to ask him about it in our interview because everybody asks him about it, and I already knew the story of how he came up with that quote on the moon just a couple of hours after they landed. But what he said to me was the emotional moment was the landing. That was human contact with the moon. But the rest of the world was so focused on that first footstep that he really had no choice, and he did beautifully, as we all know. He came up with a wonderful quote.

SULLIVAN: As we mentioned, he was a notoriously private man, but you came to know him as a friend. How was Neil Armstrong, the public figure, different from the Neil Armstrong, say, at dinner with his family?

CHAIKIN: Well, I think the thing that people don't realize is, you know, he was so shy. He was really uncomfortable with the attention. And it's ironic that someone who is that way was thrust into one of the most absolutely white hot glares of publicity and celebrity that any human has had to endure. Having said that, when you got him away from that and he felt comfortable, he was warm, he was engaging, he had a really dry, delightful sense of humor, could tell great stories and could laugh. And, you know, he really was a delight.

And the more I got to know him, the more I kind of cherished that about him. But at the same time, I always had this feeling of tremendous admiration for Neil as a pioneer, as an explorer, as really the essence of the test pilot who did what he did, not for his own gratification, but for advancing the state of human knowledge and achievement.

SULLIVAN: Did Armstrong have thoughts on the direction of the U.S. space program later in life?

CHAIKIN: Yes. We talked about that some. He was very distressed at the way that NASA's future had become what he called the equivalent of a badminton shuttlecock getting hit back and forth between Congress and the White House and so on. But I think he was most anxious to see us get back in the exploration game, to get back to the moon and go even farther. But I never doubted his motivation or his passion or his belief that space exploration is part of the destiny of humankind.

SULLIVAN: Do you have any favorite memories of him, anything that jumps out at you when you think of Neil Armstrong?

CHAIKIN: Actually, one of the moments that I think about most is about an hour and a half into the moon walk, Buzz Aldrin had a different task to work on than Neil did, and Neil actually had a minute to be off on his own and explore the area. And he took off running to a crater that was about 200 feet behind the Lunar Lander. It only took him about a minute to run back there and snap some pictures and then another minute to run back, you know? And I often picture him loping in that one-sixth lunar gravity, literally venturing where no human had gone before. And, you know, it's a great little moment of human exploration that I always associate with him.

SULLIVAN: That's journalist Andrew Chaikin speaking about Neil Armstrong who died today at the age of 82. Andrew, thank you so much for joining us.

CHAIKIN: Thank you.

Rob Ford meets with casino billionaire Adelson

Sheldon Adelson, the U.S. billionaire owner of the Las Vegas Sands casino empire, met privately with Mayor Rob Ford in the mayor?s city hall office Thursday.

The pair presumably spoke about Adelson?s interest in building a casino resort on Toronto?s waterfront. Sands signalled interest, along with MGM Resorts International, Caesars Entertainment and others, after the Ontario government said it will build one new casino in the GTA.

The province has said it won?t force the casino on an unwilling municipality. Toronto city council will have what is expected to be a ferocious debate this fall on whether to give the province, and casino suitors, a green light.

The mayor has said he would welcome a casino if it would bring jobs and revenue to the city. But his shaky hold on council makes the vote, to come after a staff report on possible benefits and downsides, uncertain.

Adelson, 79 ? getting lots of attention at home as the biggest Republican donor ahead of November?s presidential election ? sounded cautious about the casino opportunity after meeting with Ford.

?There?s lots of ifs,? Adelson said.

Will Green Energy Ever Be in the Black?

Here?s a situation that has the makings of an environmental Catch 22: Green energy startups need money to help get their businesses off the ground. The government has been providing them with subsidies, and the startups have used that assistance as leverage to court private investors in the hopes of eventually freeing themselves from a dependency on subsidies.

But it looks like this tidy little system is about to come apart.

?Green energy startups are feeling the sting of rejection by investors concerned about falling energy prices and the future of government support,? CNN reported today. ?The boom in natural gas has hurt the competitiveness of alternative energy. And proposed budget cuts would force the government to dial back support of wind farms, solar panel manufacturers, ethanol producers and makers of alternative fuel cars.?

MORE: The Choice: Feed Your Family or Feed Your Car?

CNN quotes Rosa McCormick, managing director of Wild Basin Investments in Austin, Texas, as saying that solar panel makers are suffering the most because U.S. companies can't lower prices enough to compete with solar panels imported from China where the government provides big subsidies. "The bottom fell out of that market," McCormick said. "No one wants to touch that. It's toxic from an investor point of view."

The Chinese apparently disagree, since Fox News reported this morning that, ?China?s government has ruled that U.S. government support to six American solar and wind power projects violates free trade rules, adding to strains between Beijing and its trading partners over renewable energy.?

The story goes on to say, ?The Chinese probe was launched last November two weeks after Washington said it would investigate whether Beijing is inappropriately subsidizing its own makers of solar panels, allowing them to flood the U.S. market with low-priced products and hurt American competitors.?

And speaking of the Chinese, they?re also apparently in on the boom in natural gas that?s hurting the alternative energy industry. The Guardian reports today that ?Royal Dutch Shell plans to spend at least $1 billion a year exploiting China's?potentially vast resources of shale gas, the firm's top China executive has said, in an aggressive strategy to expand in the world's biggest energy?market.?

Back in the U.S., the news isn?t much better for wind farms and ethanol producers. CNN noted, ?A federal tax credit that pays 30% of costs for new wind farms is set to expire at the end of this year. If Congress doesn't renew it, new turbine construction could 'dramatically slow,? according to a recent Energy Department report.?

And this year?s drought and the subsequent rise in the price of corn is leading to calls to review the government?s mandate requiring that ethanol be blended into gasoline. ?Bob Calcaterra, managing director of St. Louis-based StartUp Midwest Management, is avoiding investments tied to the ethanol industry. There's too much reliance on government assistance, and there's no telling how long that will last,? said CNN.

To paraphrase Rosa McCormick, this all sounds like a pretty toxic situation.

Do you think the government should reassure investors that its support for the alternative energy industry will continue, or do you think the subsidies should end? Let us know in the comments.

ChristianLindholm.com: A personal case of proactive health care ...

? Nokia struggles as phones become emotional commodities | Main

A personal case of proactive health care leveraging the scalpel

I have been a researching the mobile health and digital health space while at Fjord and one of the clear trends is the drive towards proactive healthcare leveraging digital tools like pedometers like Fitbit, fitness platforms like Nike+ and wellness communities like HeiaHeia. These tools are generating data, which generates information and ultimate knowledge.

In my research I have developed a deeper interest in my own wellbeing. I log several factors using my Fuelband, my Withings scale and my? iPhone using platforms like HeiaHeia and Cyclemeter. I changed my diet towards lower carb intake, more vegetables and started jogging actively. Starting jogging was a real boost. I now do 2-3 times a week, I run typically about 10km and always listen to books while I run, I have not read as many books in years as I have while running. I have done acupuncture and tuina massage for a several years at my chinese doctor in London?s Chinatown, it works very well.

?The space I find fascinating is sleep. Sleep is something we know very little of. It was not until the emergence of the Zeo band that it was possible to monitor sleep at home. I do not suffer from sleep apne, all I know is, if I do not sleep well I become grumpy and underperforming, after longer periods of poor sleep my short term memory seems to deteriorate.

I have for a longtime been aware that I do not breathe through my nose when sleeping, something we are evolved to do.? This leads to a dry mouth, which leads to the need to drink during the night, which leads to waking up. None of this is scientifically validated. ?I did some experiments and realized that my left nostril was almost blocked. I then read about and discussed about having an operation to open it up called Rhinoplasty, essentially plastic surgery in the nose. I went to the GP and discussed it and he sent me to the specialist and this week after waiting for 6 months I was on the operation table.

What I find so amazing is that I could have this as part of our healthcare system in Finland, one of the best in the world. This is a proof point that Finland is one of the best countries to live in. The surgery is not in this case a form of vanity, nor is it clinically needed, so it has to be a case of proactive medicine for a better life quality. Thus the state invests in its people. Thank you. The question who is the judge on this, who benefits and why should the state pay.

I think it is very good that the surgeons make a decision, should it be done, can it help. They did offer me drugs, I declined.

I think the state can benefit, as I will be more creative and productive, generate more output and as part of it of is taxed and put in circulation.

I had to wait for the operation for 6 months, two weeks before they changed the date, so one could argue that I was filling up a gap in the system. Giving state employed surgeons practice, yes they do need practice to perfect their skills.?

It will be incredibly interesting to follow is how does this affect my life and my sleeping and subsequently my energy level, my short term memory, my teeth and the sleeping patterns of my wife. I will let you know.

I believe new technology can inspire people to exercise and do sports. My first experience was Nokia Sports Tracker which inspired me to go jogging frequently. It was so fun and useful to follow my progress. Later I bought a heartbelt and started following my heart rate in different conditions. I could see how my body reacts to downhills, uphills, different paces et cetera.

Of course there are people who are motivated enough to sports as themselves, but for me this technology aspect helped in keeping my interest.

Realtor Etiquette - Showing Basics

Realtor Etiquette - Showing Basics

I have been involved in the real estate industry for over 25 years, off and on.? I started my career in property management and I've worked in Commercial Real Estate and Residential as well.? I've even owned and operated my own brokerage.? One of my pet peeves is etiquette.? My parents were huge on Emily Post, do you remember Emily Post?? Perhaps Anne Landers???

I guess it was a different era then, but some of the basic lessons are so common sensical.? Amidst today's fast-paced world of technological innovation and casual lifestyles, manners naturally adapt to new situations. Social and cultural traditions fuse and transform in new ways, and the roles and expectations of adults and children evolve to meet those trends. Despite continuous changes, however, social civility remains rooted in the guiding principles of respect, consideration, and honesty.

Today I got a call from the showing service that makes showing appointments for my listings.? An agent made an appointment for 1:00 to 1:30 pm.? My clients packed up their nasty dog and went out for a while.? They returned at about 3:00 pm and went about their lives.? At 4:30 pm the agent accesses the key to the front door from the lockbox and walks into the house without knocking and doesn't understand why they are upset afterall he had an appointment.?

A few basics of Realtor ethics:

  1. Read the showing instructions carefully and follow those instructions.? If the instructions say there is a pet, then be sure to make an appointment and abide by it.? The dog might not be a bichon.
  2. If you are running late please call and notify the showing service that you are running late so they can notify the seller.
  3. If you aren't going to show the house, call the showing service and cancel your appointment.
  4. If there's more than one home for sale on a street double check to make sure the home you are showing is the one you have the appointment for.?
  5. Lock all doors, turn off all lights if you are instructed to?and return the key to the lockbox.? If the lockbox is a combination type box, be sure to spin the dials and not leave the combination on the box.?
  6. Provide feedback.
  7. If you use the facilities, flush.? If the house is vacant, don't use the facilities.
  8. Always knock first before entering any house.
  9. Stay with your client, don't let your client wander unescorted around anyone's home.? You don't want to be accused of removing items from the home.?
  10. Don't change the climate control in the home.
  11. Don't change the combination of the lockbox.
  12. MAKE AN APPOINTMENT!!? Don't show houses without calling first.

Thank you for showing!!

We use daily manners constantly without even thinking. From greeting and introducing others to making requests and expressing thanks, these simple exchanges are the foundation of all interactions. Since our choices impact others, it is important to make our choices thoughtfully, so as to communicate a considerate awareness of oneself and others.

If you are thinking of buying or selling an?home in? ?Binaural Beat? cryptic code found in Bach's ... - World News Tomorrow

world news tomorrow

WORLD NEWS TODAY ? Bach?s Music further explored. Recently Prof. Baretzky a Global Security threat analyst announced that a ?Binaural Beat? cryptic code were found that presents itself in almost all of Bach?s music compositions. The music of Bach were written almost a 150 years prior to the discovery of the Binaural beats by Heinrich Wilhelm Dove in 1839.

Binaural beats or binaural tones are auditory processing artifacts, or apparent sounds, the perception of which arises in the brain independent of physical stimuli. Couple this with a cryptic massage and its? time machine for exploratory consciousness that can lead to doing things against your will.

The brain produces a phenomenon resulting in low-frequency pulsations in the loudness of a perceived sound when two tones at slightly different frequencies are presented separately, one to each of a subject?s ears, using stereo headphones. A beating tone will be perceived, as if the two tones mixed naturally, out of the brain. Prof. Baretzkuy added that this is a technology that has yet not been explored to its fullest extend and have many military and medical ramifications . In 2003 Prof Baretzky were invited to the European Space Agency? ESTEC to present his findings on this issue that were dismissed by many however the Space agency did fund other classified projects while Baretzky were the Vice -president of Sowoon Technologies S a r l,? Switzerland.? Baretzky : ?We know that we could do Brain indoctrinations with these techniques but the important things is that we don?t know what is in the code of Bach?s music. All we know it can create under the right circumstances a hypnotic state.

In order for the binaural beating to be heard the frequency of the tones must be below about 1,000 to 1,500 hertz he said. At the same time the use of low frequency can course ramifications as it ultimately deals with sound and using sound as interception of the mind in order to achieve an hypnotic state that then could be used to introduce anything from believe systems to war propaganda?s by altering the behavior model that would re-route the psychological behavior of man with ultimate price of taking control over his thoughts.

According to scientist the differences between the two frequencies must be small (below about 30 Hz) for the effect to occur; otherwise the two tones will be heard separately and no beat will be perceived.

Interest in binaural beats can be classified into two categories. Firstly, they are of interest to neurophysiologists investigating the sense of hearing. Secondly (and more controversially), binaural beats reportedly influence the brain in more subtle ways through the entrainment of brainwaves and can be used to produce relaxation and other health benefits such as pain relief.

Overview

Binaural beats may influence functions of the brain besides those related to hearing. A good illustration is that of Derren Brown demonstrated on public TV in 2008 that once could control the mind via the use of the TV by using the Binaural beats in combinations with Subliminal massaging ( Link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaDQDqLE3eA) . Note, when the Binaural beats were turned off the same video has no effect on anybody when looking at the video.

This phenomenon is called frequency following response. The concept is that if one receives a stimulus with a frequency in the range of brain waves, the predominant brain wave frequency is said to be likely to move towards the frequency of the stimulus (a process called entrainment). In addition, binaural beats have been credibly documented to relate to both spatial perception & stereo auditory recognition, and , according to the frequency following response, activation of various sites in the brain.

The stimulus does not have to be aural; it can also be visual or a combination of aural and visual. (One such example would be Dreamachine.) However, using alpha frequencies with such stimuli can trigger photosensitive epilepsy.

Perceived human hearing is limited to the range of frequencies from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz, though Infrasound sound below 20Hz still have scientifically observable effects on humans, however, it is not readily audible, especially at low volume levels. While the frequencies of human brain waves are below about 40 Hz. To account for this lack of perception, binaural beat frequencies are used. Beat frequencies of 40 Hz have been produced in the brain with binaural sound and measured experimentally.

Baretzky said ?We know that these sound waves can change the? structures of water and the brain contains 92% water fluid??

When the perceived beat frequency corresponds to the delta, theta, alpha, beta, or gamma range of brainwave frequencies, the brainwaves entrain to or move towards the beat frequency. For example, if a 315 Hz sine wave is played into the right ear and a 325 Hz one into the left ear, the brain is entrained towards the beat frequency (10 Hz, in the alpha range). Since alpha range is associated with relaxation, this has a relaxing effect or if in the beta range, more alertness. An experiment with binaural sound stimulation using beat frequencies in the Beta range on some participants and Delta/Theta range in other participants, found better vigilance performance and mood in those on the awake alert state of Beta range stimulation.

Binaural beat stimulation has been used fairly extensively to induce a variety of states of consciousness, there has been some work done in regards to the effects of these stimuli on relaxation, focus, attention, and states of consciousness. Studies have shown that with repeated training to close frequency sounds that a plastic reorganization of the brain occurs for the trained frequencies and is capable of asymmetric hemispheric balancing. The conspiricay question now remains.? Are we all being brain washed and if so why and by Who ?

Holed-up Assange tells Obama to end WikiLeaks 'witchhunt'

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange urged President Barack Obama to end the US "witchhunt" against his whistleblowing website Sunday, speaking from Ecuador's London embassy where he has been holed up for two months.

Assange walked into the embassy in June after exhausting all legal avenues in Britain to stop being extradited to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning over sex crimes.

"I ask President Obama to do the right thing, the United States must renounce its witchhunt against WikiLeaks," said Assange in his first public comments since being granted political asylum by Ecuador on Thursday.

Assange praised the "courage" shown by the Latin American nation's President Rafael Correa in giving him asylum, a move that has angered Britain which has said it would continue to seek his extradition.

The 41-year-old Australian made his speech from the balcony of the embassy, which was ringed by police, in order to avoid leaving its grounds and being arrested.

But Assange gave no indication of what his next move might be.

He claims the accusations of sex crimes in Sweden against him -- made by two female WikiLeaks volunteers -- are politically motivated and that he will eventually be extradited to the United States.

WikiLeaks enraged Washington by releasing video of a US attack in Iraq, as well as tens of thousands of classified US documents about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Assange on Sunday also called for US soldier Bradley Manning, the alleged source of a massive trove of secret government documents leaked by WikiLeaks, to be released from a military prison.

He claimed Manning "was found by the United Nations to have endured months of tortuous detention" at the US Marine Corps jail in Quantico, Virginia.

While thanking his own supporters, Assange accused police of trying to enter the embassy after he was given asylum.

"Inside this embassy after dark, I could hear teams of police swarming up into the building through its internal fire escape," he said from the balcony situated just above a line of police officers standing in the street below.

"But I knew there would be witnesses, and that is because of you," he told around 100 supporters gathered outside the embassy.

Britain has said it could invoke a little-used piece of legislation introduced in 1987 that allows it to revoke the diplomatic immunity of an embassy on British soil and go in to arrest Assange.

The warning was seen as a threat by Ecuador which condemned it.

However, Britain now says it would prefer a negotiated solution.

With a new haircut and wearing a blue shirt and maroon tie, Assange claimed Britain had "thrown away" the Vienna Conventions in warning Ecuador that it could enter the building to extract him.

Despite Ecuador providing a haven for Assange, British Foreign Secretary William Hague has said Britain had no choice but to seek his extradition.

Ecuador has meanwhile received powerful backing from regional allies as they warned Britain of "grave consequences" if it breaches diplomatic security at the London embassy.

Foreign ministers from the Venezuela-led so-called Bolivarian Alliance for the People of Our America (ALBA) flew to Ecuador on Saturday to demonstrate full diplomatic support.

Ahead of Assange's appearance, his high-profile Spanish lawyer Baltasar Garzon said the former hacker was in "fighting spirit".

Reading from a statement outside the embassy on Sunday, Garzon said Assange had instructed his lawyers "to carry out a legal action in order to protect the right of WikiLeaks, Julian himself and all those currently being investigated."

WikiLeaks on Sunday hinted that Assange would be willing to meet with Swedish authorities as long as Stockholm guaranteed that it would not extradite him to the United States.

"It would be a good basis to negotiate a way to end this matter if the Swedish authorities would declare without any reservation that Julian would never be extradited from Sweden to the USA," WikiLeaks spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson told AFP.

Assange is said to be living in a small room within the embassy, which is situated in London's upmarket neighbourhood of Knightsbridge near to the Harrods department store.

His mother on Sunday praised hugely her son's speech.

"It was fabulous," Christine Assange said.

"He looks so well, he sounds well, he puts many so-called leaders to shame. He's written and read a brilliant speech... which has inspired millions," she said according to the Australian Associated Press.

Quakes Beneath Antarctic Glacier Linked to Ocean Tides

Thousands of earthquakes occurring in rapid succession in less than a year under an Antarctic glacier may have been linked to ocean tides, new research suggests.

Scientists investigated seismic activity under David Glacier, a large glacier in East Antarctica about 270 square miles (700 square kilometers) in size. The glacier serves as the outlet from which ice from 4 percent of that region's ice sheet drains out toward the sea.

To learn more about the foundations and behavior of this glacier, the researchers analyzed seismic data gathered from there over a nine-month period between 2002 and 2003 by the Transantarctic Mountains Seismic Experiment array of 42 seismometers. They identified about 20,000 seismic events during this period that were stronger and lasted longer than the shaking typically seen with glaciers.

"The fact these events exist is fairly surprising," researcher Lucas Zoet, a glaciologist at Pennsylvania State University, told OurAmazingPlanet. "This type of seismic behavior had not been observed before in Antarctic outlet glaciers, so one main challenge was just to categorize it initially."

The earthquakes also perplexingly occurred at regular intervals about 25 minutes apart.

"This is not something that would have been expected, so when we looked at the data, this pattern of events every 25 minutes really popped out," Zoet said.

The researchers suggest this shaking was caused by the debris-laden ice of the glacier moving over a rough patch of bedrock and that the regularity of these events was linked to glacier movement by ocean tides.

Specifically, the tides influence the speed at which the glacier flows, Zoet explained. "When the tide is high, the speed goes down a little bit, and that reduction in speed results in changes to the spacing of the seismicity," he said. "The high tide causes events to become spaced further in time, while the low tide causes them to become closer."

It remains uncertain what additional seismic changes might come with sea level rise or when the next big earthquake there might occur, "but when we find something unexpected such as this, it allows to get a better grasp on the basics, which may in time further our insights with those large-scale processes," Zoet said.

The scientists detailed their findings online Aug. 19 in the journal Nature Geoscience.

NEW YORK (AP) - David Beckham, sporting designer underwear, is making appearances around New York City - in the form of 10-foot-tall metallic statues, that is.

The massive sculptures have gone up as part of a promotion for the soccer player's new underwear line for H&M.

The Daily News says three of the larger-than-life statues have been placed inside H&M's midtown-Manhattan store. There's also one in Central Park and another at the South Street Seaport.

There are also two statues in Los Angeles and one in San Francisco.

They'll remain on display until Aug. 31.

Conte: Drug use 'rampant' in professional baseball

The use of performance-enhancing drugs is rampant in baseball, BALCO founder Victor Conte told USA Today.

"I would say maybe as much as half of baseball (is using PEDs)," said Conte, whose supplements company was linked to sluggers Barry Bonds and Jason Giambi, among others, when it was raided by the FBI in 2003.

"I'm not going to name names. But I've talked to a lot of top players in Major League Baseball, and they tell me this is what they're doing. There is rampant use of synthetic testosterone."

Ryan Braun, the 2011 National League MVP, won an appeal after testing positive for high levels of testosterone when a panel ruled the handling of his test sample didn't meet protocol.

MLB vice-president Rob Manfred doubted Conte's statement, saying: "There is no way that Victor Conte would have information that would allow him to have any basis on that. He's just making that up. It's a guess. We use the very best, most sophisticated methodologies that are available."

ChiHealth - Articles | Food | Coffee, A True Addictive!

?

It's an addictive; a stimulant, the taste of goodness to some and it alters our mood. Yes, its coffee! Coffee being the most famous drink of all times has been a routine drink for most of us. While it is popular for its natural flavor, this age old typical coffee drink is now made with different combinations to give interesting products like mocha, cappuccino, caf? latte etc.

Coffee benefits are many; to name a few, they reduce the risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Coffee contains the anticancer compound methylpyridinium. It is not present in raw coffee beans but is formed during the roasting process. It is present in both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee, and even in instant coffee. This component in it has given some a better reason to drink coffee regularly!

However, drinking coffee has proven to be an addiction in many and this has carried a lot of health issues with it. Coffee stimulates the adrenal glands which are responsible for the production of stress hormones. If we go back to our ancestral days, they would want to drink coffee very often and would have a heavy activity throughout the day. In the generation that we live in, physical activity is less and intake of coffee has continued to the same effect as our ancestors. This combination has resulted in certain changes in the release of insulin affecting the sugar level.

Another concern that surrounds coffee is that coffee fits into the receptors for a brain chemical known as adenosine, which is partly responsible for calming down. With excess intake of coffee, it makes you feel awake and hyperactive... Though coffee is connected to our daily life, studies do not allow you to consume more than two cups per day.

For those weight watchers and diabetics, black coffee is the best option. Coffee without milk and sugar can be a very good option to avoid extra calories for the day. Coffee with skimmed milk and sugar substitutes will also be a good option. Someone who is ready to give up coffee can switch to green tea, herb tea or lemon tea without sugar.
After all, everything in moderation is the best way to go!

2012 Out & Equal Workplace Summit ? New Workshops for 2012 ...

Workshops are the heart & soul of Out & Equal Workplace Summit. From passionate presenters to engaged participants, workshops allow Workplace Summit attendees to gather, share information, learn, teach, discuss and connect.

Every year at the Workplace Summit, approximately 120 workshops are presented over three days. This year, we look forward to a myriad of exciting new workshops that have been added to to our list.

Here are some? of the workshops that are new to the Workplace Summit in 2012. We?ll post the rest of the list in an upcoming blog:

A New Frontier in Workplace Equality: Mitigating the LGBT Tax
This workshop will feature a panel of speakers to include HR professionals in compensation and taxation, diversity group leaders, and a representative from our business colleagues at Google (the first major employer to mitigate the adverse impacts of the ?gay tax?).
The objectives for the session are:
1. Understanding the impact that LGBT tax has on employees who elect health care benefits for same-sex spouses or partners.
2. Demonstrating how employers may assist employees facing the ?LGBT Tax? to overcome the financial burden.
3. Sharing best practices for those employee resource groups, business leaders and HR executives who wish to implement tax equality for their employees.

Beyond Mentorship: Turning Allies into Career Sponsors
One of the most powerful keys to professional success can be the engagement of a career sponsor;? someone to take an active interest in helping you drive your own career. This workshop will explore mentorship fundamentals and empower participants to use these techniques in building and growing strong professional relationships beyond traditional mentorship to effective career sponsorships. We will discuss challenges that may exist in building relationships between LGBT and non-LGBT colleagues, and explore ways to overcome those challenges. Through interactive exercises, participants will develop a personal strategy to identify, engage, and maintain fruitful relationships with a career sponsor. This tactical how-to workshop will give participants tools they can begin to use immediately.

Transition Guideline Development: Revisited One Year Later
In the year since presenting the Gender Transition Guidelines at Johnson & Johnson, the business case for this document has intensified. During the course of the coming months following the implementation of these guidelines, Johnson & Johnson expanded from employing 1? Transgender employee to employing 4? transgender employees, all in different stages of transition. In revisiting these guidelines, we will investigate what parts of the plan worked and what parts have not, what has changed as a result of this influx of transgender employees and how we worked to accommodate multiple transitions, each with different factors playing into their employment and decisions to move forward with becoming their authentic selves in the workplace.

Where are They? Reaching out to LGBT employees of color
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people come in every race but very often those who are also people of color are not at the table. As LGBT people and as a people of color, they must manage multiple identities while navigating the corporate environment. LGBT people of color face unique challenges in moving into corporate management and leadership roles because of multiple layers of cultural, societal and historical discrimination. This session will examine some of the reasons why many LGBT people of color choose not to come out, the ways this may affect both their careers and the success of the organization, and actionable ways employers and coworkers can help make the workplace safer to be out as an LGBT person of color.

Helping ERGs Embrace the B and T
Does your Employee Resource Group?s alphabet begin with G and end with L? While your ERG may have the best intentions, it could be accidentally excluding others. Even the best ERG can become more inclusive.? This workshop, facilitated by a bisexual and a transgender woman, will include a forum to share ways to make your ERG more inclusive of sexual and gender diversity while helping to build equality.? Greater ERG diversity can help your company attract and retain top talent.

Trans Inclusive: Successful workplace transition with CH2MHill and The Center
In March 2011 The GLBT Community Center of Colorado and CH2MHill teamed up to provide a successful workplace transition opportunity for a trans employee. Center Legal Director Mindy Barton and Trans Program Coordinator Courtney Gray worked hand in hand with HR leadership at the company to provide 360 support and education to staff ? co-workers, supervisors, and transitioning staff to create the right environment for success. This workshop will be a case study of what went right and best practices and policies your company can employ now to advance transgender inclusion in your workplace. We?ll also touch on ways your company can partner with local LGBT centers.

Recruiting LGBTQA College Students: Lessons From the Students
Learn the best practices and worst mistakes in recruiting LGBTQA college students from college students themselves.? The GLBTQA Business Student Association at The University of Texas is one of the first undergraduate business student organizations in the country dedicated to promoting LGBTQA diversity in the workplace.? As officers, we facilitated over 200 student-employer interactions in Fall 2011 alone.? We?re here to share which techniques will establish your employer as a student?s number one choice, and which will fail to build interest.? We also share the recruiting etiquette rule that if broken by the employer can end the employer?s relationship with the student organization.? These techniques can work in any field and at any campus, without or without a responsive LGBT student organization.

Increasing the Impact of Diversity Through Connective Thinking
The purpose of this workshop is to empower members of a team to think of solutions to various problems starting with an emphasis on diversity of thought.? By moving the initial focus of problem solving from the solution itself to what qualities inherent in each group member makes their perspective unique, we enable a different set of answers to be uncovered. This is an approach that we?ve had success with at The Clorox Company when discussing new product attributes and would like to share with those focused on promoting diversity of thought.

LGBT Issues in a Globalized Workplace
In many countries outside the U.S., LGBT people face open discrimination, violence and criminal prosecution, creating special challenges for multinational corporations and their LGBT employees. This workshop will cover some of the opportunities and risks LGBT professionals face when working overseas, such as cultural differences between the U.S. and the West. You will learn where it is? and isn?t? safe to come out to your non-American colleagues, working virtually across borders, and laws addressing homosexuality across the globe.

Increasing the value of your professional image and balancing authenticity
Approximately 55 percent of first impressions are based on overall appearance, and people craft their first impressions of you within 10 seconds of a first encounter. As professionals we must recognize the inherent power of our professional presence and understand the impression it can form in the mind of those with whom we do business. This workshop intends to provide the audience with the tools to perform a self-assessment of their current image, identify the levers that can help balance authenticity in the workplace, as well as provide them with a set of concrete program ideas to take back to their local BRG organizations to share this valuable information with others.

Representing the Voiceless: Bringing Transgender Education to the Workplace
Mercer?s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Ally Network share their approach on how they advocated, represented and spoke for the Transgender community internally and externally, despite having any active Transgender members.? This workshop explores how a network can effectively create communications, public education and partnership with the transgender community, creating a culture of inclusion and equality in the workforce.

The Next Frontier: Allies ? Acceleration and Impact
There is a new constituency in workplace diversity with the potential to change the game ? and that?s allies. Currently defined in the context of LGBT ERGs, allies are stepping forward like never before, swelling the ranks of ERG memberships and lending a new kind of support, influence, passion and political savvy to a company?s inclusion efforts. Whether your organization has an allies initiative underway or is simply wondering where to start, this panel will consist of the architects of allies programs at leading companies, who will share best practices, lessons learned, and future plans. The session will be moderated by Jennifer Brown, who along with her team at JBC is researching the allies phenomenon and creating corporate strategies to leverage this powerful resource.

Diversity in the Workforce?Thinking Beyond Locally and Acting Globally
Global employers are discovering both the advantages and challenges of creating a diverse workforce.? Perhaps one of the most difficult areas to address globally is the inclusion of LGBT employees into the organization, both at the employers? local level as well as worldwide.? Progress toward achieving such a goal and employment equality is particularly daunting when trying to overcome not only internal challenges, but cultural ones as well.? For example,? how can one establish an inclusive workforce when the employer is located in a region hostile to LGBT individuals?? This workshop is designed to aid employers in establishing such a workforce through corporate infrastructure that includes creating ERG?s, training, and follow-through once programs and procedures are put in place.

Marketing to Your Marketers
Sometimes it takes more than just a great idea to create a successful partnership or event. Whether you are an ERG Leader or Community Partner, find out more about how to promote your organization and ideas into successful partnerships and events. Find out what you need to know when presenting your ideas to your marketing team. Learn directly from a PepsiCo brand manager; a Scott Seitz?s of SPI Marketing LGBT marketing expert and the NGLTF?s director of corporate relations on how to think like a marketer.

LGBT community: cross-cultural challenges in the global workplace
While LGBT issues are moving towards equality in some countries, the global workplace includes countries that have not or only recently have decriminalized homosexuality. The combination of being LGBT or ally in a culture faced with the harsh realities of prison or death for being perceived as LGBT introduces a level complexity that goes beyond basic cross-cultural communication and LGBT awareness. Those that are fortunate to experience LGBT progress have a role in bridging with and mentoring individual LGBTs and global network ERGs located in other cultures that have not yet come as far.? Although awareness of political oppression and complex cultures can facilitate healthy work relationships for global teams, continuing to expand our awareness and cultural sensitivity to support our LGBT colleagues abroad is the next tier in building a fully inclusive global workplace.

Inclusion & Diversity Competency:? How leveraging diverse workforces differentiates global leaders
Today, organizations face greater demands than ever, operating and competing in a time of unprecedented complexity and change.? They must grapple with new challenges from the external environment, such as fierce competition for and emerging needs of talent, shifting sources of talent, changing? organization structures and strategies, volatile political landscapes, changing workforce demographics, consumer preferences, and shifting centers of economic power and activity; as well as internal issues of efficiency, growth and transformation. Organizations that incorporate an inclusion and diversity infrastructure into their workforce strategy are more productive and innovative than their competitors, making them better equipped to tackle challenges from today?s multicultural and global marketplace.? Come hear from companies that ?get it? and learn how the diversity of their workforce sets them apart from their competitors.

LGBT in Asian Outsourcing Centers:Growing Networks & Offering Benefits
Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) makes up a significant amount of the employee base at most multinational corporations.? In today?s extremely global workplace, we should strive to embrace our diversity principles in all offices where our valued talent resides. India is the leading country for offshore outsourcing.? The Americas and Europe are the largest customers for the Indian outsourcing industry and account for 60 percent and 31 percent respectively of the Information Technology and BPO sectors.? The Philippines is second to India for business process outsourcing in Asia. The Philippine outsourcing industry alone currently holds 10% of the global market share and is one of the most preferred offshoring destinations in Southeast Asia because of the country?s high English literacy rate. With the inevitable expansion of business beyond the North American region, it is integral that core LGBT Activities and standards remain consistent globally, and focus is now being given on the faster growing communities within Asia. Our American and Filipino LGBTF Global Leadership Council Officers at Thomson Reuters will be sharing points on:? The LGBTF communities in the Philippines and India;? Gaining internal support for LGBTF networks outside of the Americas; Representation from the Asian Region on the Global LGBTF leadership team; Steps towards the globalization and standardization of benefits for LGBT community members; Challenges and victories

From Basement to Board Room: The Evolution of a Fortune 100 ERG
What started as a handful of hopeful people working without an Office of Diversity or a budget has grown into a leading ERG with packed monthly meetings, a full calendar of meaningful events and a business liaison committee with executive leadership?s ear. Founding and current leaders of MassMutual?s Pride ERG will provide insight into the necessary steps to these milestones including how to leverage your company?s sponsorships and work with other ERGs for effective programming with lasting impact.

Building Transgender Cultural Competence in the Culturally Diverse Organization
What is the best way to train your workforce in transgender inclusion? As organizations worldwide add gender identity to their diversity portfolios, advocates at all levels are seeking the best tools to provide professional learning opportunities that consider these issues. Which methods are most effective at extending a culture of inclusion to cover transgender workers, clients and customers ? particularly in places where many perceive non-traditional gender identities as controversial? Drawing on her experience as the lead educator on transgender issues at the U.S.?s largest LGBT civil rights organization, Allyson Robinson will lay out a training framework organized around principles of cultural competence. Participants will learn how to employ a shared ?culture of gender? to overcome other cultural barriers and build truly inclusive organizations.
