The first in the Dancestreams Creative Spirit Workshop series, "Art & the Dancer" will explore how art can influence dance creation and how dance can influence art. Sara Stone, Nanaimo artist & teacher, will lead the group in making plaster "performance" masks. Choreographer & professional dancer Maiko Miyauchi from Vancouver will teach an urban dance master class and then with Sara lead the dancers in a creative dance workshop. Maiko began her dance career in Tokyo, studying classical ballet. After a stint at the Goh Ballet in Vancouver, she switched her focus to jazz, hip hop, urban and contemporary dance. She has an extensive background in both film & television- her credits include Sucker Punch, Once Upon A Time, Hellcats, John Tucker Must Die, The Sorority Wars, Caprica, Impulse, and Black Sash. Maiko has also worked with artists like Young MC, Elise Estrada, Cory Lee, Econoline Crush, and danced professionally for the Canadian Football League. Her current side project is being co-founder and coordinator of Bare Movement, expanding her work in artist development, choreography for music video, film, and other corporate work. In addition to commercial and corporate dance Maiko is extremely passionate about the innovation and freedom of contemporary dance. After joining the successful Canadian contemporary group The 605 Collective, and The response Dance company her love for contemporary is even stronger. Maiko will be returning in the fall to create a new piece of choreography for Dancestreams, based in part on this movement workshop.
Artist Sara Stone has over eight years of experience teaching art. She has a passion for all of the arts with a specialty in Fine Arts education. Sara has instructed many art classes throughout the years, in district schools, private art schools and for Arts Alive
Summer School. She is currently the art teacher at Ladysmith Secondary School.
The workshop is open to all dancers age 12 + up. They do not need to be a Dancestreams member to attend, but if any missed the June auditions & are interested in joining Dancestreams, they should contact the Artistic Director Pattie MacKenzie for more information.
